Maya & Robobo – a Book About Emotions

[Ad- gifted product] As you probably know, Robin really loves reading. We are always going through new books as she spends quite some time reading in the evenings. Maya & Robobo is her newest finished book on her reading list! This book is about a young girl, seemingly her age, and robot who appears in her room, to learn from her. Robin is 7, turning 8 this year, and this book is designed for children age 7 to 12 years old. Maya & Robobo has a few touches towards real life situations that many children actually have experienced, especially around those ages.

Maya & Robobo

In our home, we have been working on the differences in complex emotions. The differences between frustration and being angry, how being in a bad mood can make everything, even stuff we enjoy, feel bad. How to get out of a funk or how to stop doing something that’s not bringing us joy. All of these are important, and this book goes through various emotions and explains why people feel that way and how to manage them. Maya is a brave young girl, who knows her emotions and understands why she feels that way. She also has a host of friends that are going through different situations like social pressure from school friends and divorce. Her robot friend, Robobo is actually training to be a support robot for elderly homes, but needs to learn more about emotions and how to interact with humans.

These different moments, which feel like they could happen to anyone, explain emotions, why someone would feel that way, and sometimes even offer ways to possibly feel better or prevent yourself from worrying. The end of the book also has a bunch of different exercises through breathing or movement, that can make you feel better if you are overwhelmed. There are also pictures throughout the book, that often show emotions within them. Robin read through the book in about a week, and she really enjoyed the story. Her favorite character was Robobo, as she felt he was funny and always nice. We feel she did take in and learn quite a bit about emotions, and it’s so good to have a chapter book that’s so meaningful. Maya & Robobo is a fantastic book, especially when you are working on emotions with your little one.
