Whether you’re climbing up or walking along relatively even terrains, your body will lose sweat and energy levels. This means you must replenish fluids as often as you can. Have small but consistent sips as you move forward in your journey. 

Throughout your trek, you should consume at least two to three liters of water. Similarly, you must carry energy-dense snacks to replenish your energy levels quickly. It’s equally important to mention here that not everybody burns calories the same way.

Also, women tend to burn fewer calories while at rest or during exercise (which includes hiking). This means you may not require as many snacks as your male counterpart but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Use Important Hiking Techniques 

Again, don’t let the term ‘low-elevation’ trail fool you. Even then, most hiking trails involve sudden and consistent changes in terrain and many are pretty long. This means you need to stay prepared with proper hiking techniques. 

Let’s look at some techniques that will help you complete your trip successfully – 

  • Always start with a light warm-up. This may include a walk that awakens your muscles or a few stretches that improve flexibility and prevent soreness. 
  • Do not be in a hurry. Many women start their trek in high spirits and larger strides only to end up prematurely exhausted. Yes, we used the word ‘prematurely’ because starting with excessive force wears down the body sooner. Instead, maintain a relaxed and steady pace that includes breaks whenever needed. 
  • You also need to maintain a good posture for a successful low-elevation hike. Your core should be engaged as the shoulders are relaxed and the back is straight. Keep your chin parallel to the ground, being careful to avoid leaning forward or backward. You can also use hiking poles for added stability. 
  • At all times, be hyper-aware of your surroundings. Always have an eye on the trail markings and do not venture into forbidden territories even out of curiosity. Carry along a map to keep yourself on the right route. 
  • Finally, know your strengths and limitations. If the trail seems to be getting too difficult to navigate or its conditions are challenging, never hesitate to turn back. 

Prioritize Safety 

Any travel plans should make room for safety. This must be the most important consideration before a backpacking route is selected. In case your trek is flexible, plan it with a couple of trusted friends or family members. 

This way, everyone can enjoy each other’s company while exploring the wonders of the natural world. If you’re interested in going solo, that’s not an issue but you must take special safety precautions, as listed below. 

  • If you’re not a hardcore backpacker, do not embark on a 20-mile country trail. Instead of being a superwoman, focus on making the most of your abilities and energy. You can work your way up to a longer hike. 
  • Always carry an extra layer of clothes despite what the weatherman (or woman) announces. 
  • Let everyone you trust know about your plans. Your friends and family should have clear info about your specific plans, alternative routes, the day and time you plan to return, etc. 
  • Enjoy a little extra security by bringing along a dog. However, it would only be possible across dog-friendly trails and you must always keep their leash on at all times.
