Top Five UK Cities to Visit This Christmas

The Christmas period is, quite frankly, a brilliant time of year. Even the most curmudgeonly of people cannot help but be charmed by the conviviality of the season, between the shining lights and garlands that constitute Christmas decorations and the timely resurgence of seasonal cuisines. When Christmas arrives, our cities spring to life just as much as our homes do – but which cities are the best for seasonal fun?

York

York is well and truly a jewel in the North, being one of the most picturesque cities in the nation and a festive hotspot. Its storied history encompasses Roman settlement, Viking occupation and medieval engineering, all of which are worn on its sleeve in the form of an eclectic and ancient city centre.

Its shambling city streets – one of which is literally called ‘The Shambles’ – are characterful year-round, but during the festive season play host to an incredible Christmas market. Stall-holders sell everything from handmade trinkets to artisanal meads, while pop-up venues and vendors alike sell seasonal delectations with seating and entertainment on hand. With the right day planned, York is the magical winter wonderland for which you might be looking!

London

Of course, there are few cities that do Christmas quite as well as England’s capital. London is a sprawling metropolis of seasonal activity, from shopping bazaars to ice rinks and festive installations besides. From getting in at London King’s Cross Station, there is so much to discover; Coal Drops Yard is just a stone’s throw from the station and is perfect for shopping till you drop in a completely pedestrianised area, whilst Brixton is home to its own host of unique Christmas markets.

Edinburgh

For a different flavour of urban festivity, a jaunt north to Scotland’s capital could be just the ticket. Edinburgh’s holiday season takes on a different form to most, as revellers descend both for Christmas fun and for the impending Hogmanay celebrations on December 31st.

George Street is the place to be if you are especially fond of Christmases on ice, as it plays host to a covered ice rink perfect for family adventuring. Edinburgh Castle attains a whole new mood in the festive period, with its themed light trails and tours.

Cardiff

Rounding off our capital’s tour of Britain, we come to Cardiff – the coastal capital of Wales and a stunning mixture of tradition and modernity to boot. Cardiff is a charming visit around Christmastime, especially if you are a fan of twinkly lights; Bute Park’s Christmas light trail precedes itself reputationally, as does the Winter Wonderland conglomeration of ice rinks, ice bars and more.

Manchester

Finally, we come to Manchester – a place often contested for the title ‘England’s Second City’ by Birmingham, but one which resolutely wins out every Christmas. This is in large part due to the numerous Christmas markets that crop up across the city, constituted by hundreds upon hundreds of stalls and vendors. St. Ann’s Square is transformed into a miniature Alpine retreat, and the town hall’s square hosts a holiday hubbub like no other.
