Pickle my Funny Bone Burger (The Bob’s Burgers Burger Book) | Recipe

Bob's Burger Burger Book

Bob’s Burgers is a TV series about a struggling restaurant owner named Bob. Bob’s family consists of his wife Linda and his three children. They get into all sorts of trouble and have quite a few different, wacky adventures. It’s an adult TV show that follows a very average man in a super funny family. Oh, and his restaurant is a burger joint. Jupiter has seen Bob’s Burgers and quite enjoyed the show, while Dann had not seen it before. On the menu of Bob’s Burgers, there is always a burger of the day. Often, these burgers are not actually said out loud, made, or referred to in the show, but Cole Bowden has taken these burger ideas and made recipes for each and every one of them. Loren Bouchard helped create the book as well.

The beginning of this cookbook explains the method behind making the perfect french fries and burger, so that you have some ground work to the recipes ahead. This isn’t the majority of the book, which is mainly recipes and drawings from the show, however it is enough that you’ll have a technique down before starting to make the recipes.

The idea of making recipes based on pun filled names is simply amazing, so we had to try out one of the recipes as apart of our Recipe a Week. Recipe a Week is our project for 2020, where each and every week we are taking one recipe out of a new cookbook and trying it out, then sharing out findings with you all. As we have some picky eaters in our family, we felt the best burger to try out, for now, is the Pickle my Funny Bone Burger, which focuses on fried pickles as it’s unique idea. The below recipe is adapted from the Bob’s Burgers Burger Book with a few of our own changes for our pallet.

Pickle my Funny Bone Burger

A burger inspired by the Pickle my Funny Bone Burger from the Bob's Burger Cook Book
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American
Keyword: burger, dinner, fried
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/3 cup Flour
  • 1/3 cup Cornmeal*
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tbsp Italian Seasoning
  • 1 tsp Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 16 oz Jar of Pickles
  • 4 Hamburger Buns
  • Spreadable Butter
  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp Frank’s Red Hot Sauce (or to taste)
  • 1 tbsp Ketchup (or to taste)
  • 1/2 tbsp Mustard (or to taste)
  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • Green Leaf Lettuce

Instructions

  • In a deep saucepan, heat about an inch of oil to about 180 degrees Celsius.
  • Mix the flour, cornmeal, seasoning and red pepper flakes in a large bowl. We used semolina instead of cornmeal, see below note.
  • Slice pickles into thick chips. Pat dry on paper towels and set aside.
  • Crack egg into a bowl and beat it.
  • Dunk pickles into your egg mixture and then into the seasoning mix until fully coated.
  • Fry coated pickle chips in small batches until golden brown and crunch, set aside.
  • In a bowl, mix together mayo, hot sauce, ketchup and mustard to make a burger sauce, set aside.
  • Butter your buns and toast them in a frying pan, set aside.
  • Form the beef into 4 patties and season with salt and pepper before frying until cooked as well as desired.
  • Build your burger by placing down your bottom bun, lettuce, burger patty, fried pickles, burger sauce, top bun.

Notes

*We live in the United Kingdom so getting Cornmeal is basically impossible, by the looks of things. The internet told me to get polenta, but I struggled to find that at any shops near us, so we ended up going with semolina. Semolina does not fry well, as it turns out, and doesn’t actually turn golden. The taste was still very good, but it wasn’t as good as I think cornmeal would have been, so I would recommend sticking with cornmeal if you can or trying out polenta.

We also added cheese to all of our burgers, because we like cheese burgers. Feel free to do this as well. Overall, these were decent burgers though we tend to have more salad on ours. The pickles were crunchy and vinegar tasting, and eaten up fast, both on the burger and just as something to munch on the side. We really like pickles so fried pickles was super fun to try out and is what makes this burger fantastic.
