Lockdown has brought us some of the best DIY kits out there. We have loved doing the Doughnut Time DIY kits for desserts, but when one of our favorite ramen places, Shoryu, started offering a selection of DIY Shoryu Kits, I was well onboard. These ramen kits feed two for £20, which is what you’d expect to pay for a lovely bowl of ramen. We purchased the Ganso kit, which has our favorite pork broth.
What’s in the Kit
Inside the kit, you will find a bag of their 12-hour tonkotsu soup stock, which is the broth for your ramen. These broths take ages to make, so having a quality, pre-made stock is really where the key to your delicious ramen is. There are also two handfuls of ramen noodles, a piece of char siu BBQ pork belly, some red ginger, spring onions and kikurage mushrooms. This is more than enough for two large bowls of ramen! The box also comes with an instruction guide, to help you make your ramen.
The Process
Making this ramen was dead easy. In a large pot you dump in your stock and add a bit of water, then bring it to a boil. The stock is almost a jelly, so it does need a bit of water to thin it out. In another pot of boiling water, you can cook your noodles for under a minute, then they are done. In a pan, you are able to fry off your pork belly, after slicing it. I had a lot of issues slicing the pork belly as it really wasn’t as big as it needed to be for 6 slices. This pork belly was delicious, so that did make up for it. It’s really restaurant quality.
Once you have warmed your stock, cooked your pork and have your noodles cooked, you can divide the noodles and broth between two bowls and then add your toppings. In under 10 minutes, you’ll have two amazing, large, quality bowls of ramen. These were great, they were nearly exactly what’s expected from Shoryu itself, and made for a filling lunch. There are a few other DIY Shoryu kits as well, if you’d like to try some other broths or need gluten free noodles.
I LOVE ramen, but there aren’t too many places here nearby that makes a good quality option. That being said, we really should try making our own. Not only could we enjoy it more often, but we could also tweak the ingredients to make it fit our own dietary needs. Thanks for sharing this!
It’s so true – the broth is the main thing that I feel takes ages to make.
I’ve never heard of Ramen before, but I would certainly like to try it, it sounds amazing.
Oh wow, you totally need to try Ramen!
This sounds really amazing. Would love to try since I’ve never tried before. Thanks for sharing
I hope you enjoy it!
I don’t think I’ve ever had ramen, which is a surprise given how often the dish appears in the anime I watch. I might have to try a kit like this at some point
Ramen is so good!!
