Robin is obsessed with Dog Man. She has all the books in the series, has played tons of the video game, and now we have started collecting the board games as well. Dog Man is a comic series, if you aren’t familiar, that’s got a silly dog-cop character that is often getting up to mischief! As someone whos read all of the books, she was excited to start playing the board games. During one of our by-weekly board game days at Geek Retreat, she picked Dog Man The Flip-O-Rama Game, which has a bell in it. This is primarily why she picked it!
The game itself is simple; there is a stack of cards and a bell. The instructions, interestingly, are printed on the inside of the box, so little hands won’t lose or rip the rule book. In the middle of the table, you’ll put the giant stack of cards and the bell. Then one by one, someone will reveal a card from the middle and place it around the table. If it’s a Flip-O-Rama, you all will race to dig the bell. Robin explained that a Flip-O-Rama is like a flip book or the next scene in the comic, so you’re basically looking for two cards that match.
Dog Man The Flip-O-Rama Game isn’t one that requires any sort of knowledge of the comic, which was good as Amelia, Dann and I have not actually read it. The cards, according to Robin, are from a bunch of the books, but you an tell what comes next due to the background colors and the pictures themselves. Though there are two different sets that feature a giant, muscular hot dog, for example, the background colors only match the matching one.
These comics felt very well themed and there is a good variety of cards! If you tap the bell first, then you win the pair of cards. If you tap the bell first and none of the cards match, you need to put a card from your points pile into the back of the deck. There are moments in the game when so many cards are on the table, that you know the next card will be a match! The game feels intense, fast paced, and you can easily get through a bunch of rounds in the time it takes to drink a milkshake. It’s clear that Dog Man The Flip-O-Rama game is made for people that enjoy the series, but as long as you have one fan, it’s a fun use of the comic strips!
Ahh. It’s so nostalgic! it really brings back the fun of interactive reading from the Dog Man books.
