Eating Traditional Wiener Schnitzel at Figlmüller

While in Austria, it felt like a must to try wiener schnitzel – a traditional meal of very thinly-pounded pork, breaded and fried. Figlmüller has become the place for wiener schnitzel in Vienna, as they have been serving it there for 120 years. They also are known for their home-grown wine, but we aren’t big wine drinkers! I did have grape juice there, which was absolutely the best grape juice I have ever had.

Traditional Wiener Schnitzel

Of course, we got the traditional wiener schnitzel! This had a whole page on the menu, that recommended it with their potato salad (it’s the best, it said) and some jam. The jam itself wasn’t overly sweet and really took the entire fried wiener schnitzel up a notch. I loved how this jam cut through the fried taste, it’s just a must. The potato salad was very, very interesting. It wasn’t a mayonnaise based potato salad and instead had a sort of lightly creamy, mustard sauce. It was refreshing more than dense. The traditional wiener schnitzel from Figlmüller was massive – bigger than the plate. It was delicious yet simple, which is exactly what I would expect from something traditional.

Dann’s Pan Seared Fish

Dann got a massive portion of pan seared fish, with a side of sauteed potatoes. The top of this fish had some sort of crispy nuts, which was interesting, and the skin itself was nice and crispy too. Dann said it was very well cooked! His potatoes had some parsley sprinkled over it, which feels like it really levelled up something simple to make it more interesting. It was a simple meal but Dann very much enjoyed it. I am not a big fish eater, so I didn’t really try it, but he did try my food and said it was very good!

After all of this massive food, we didn’t end up getting dessert, as we had so much for mains! We did have a good time at Figlmüller and trying traditional food is a must, so this was such a good stop on our trip. It’s worth nothing there is a line to get in and that the wait staff often do not speak much English at all. The menus are in English though!
