[Ad – Gifted Product] When it comes to card games, we play a select few of them at our board game night at Geek Retreat. We often have board games or dice games that have card-related aspects to them, but we don’t find many card games themselves. It feels like the market is full of the same old, so when someone said Flip 7 was “better than Uno” I was really curious to see what my children thought of it. I must say, however, that Flip 7 is hyped up A LOT. And, that sort of hype, had us all having such a high expectation.

Flip 7 is a push-your-luck style card game where your goal is to reach 200 points. This is done by drawing cards in front of you and not getting a duplicate card. There is a lot of counting cards in this game, as there are one cards that have one on it, two that have two on it, etc all the way up until twelve. You will need to keep track of what cards have been played and what have been used, to make a better decision on if you want to take a card or bank a card. I do like the way the cards sort of connect, with the sides being different colors, so you can easily see if you have multiple of the same ones.
On your turn, you can either take a face down card and add it to your line of cards or bank the cards in front of you. Some of the cards have special abilities, like having a second life so you don’t die so soon or ones that allow you to force other people to draw several cards. If you do end up with two cards in your line of the same numbers, you will actually end up losing and needing to discard all of these cards. If you bank them, you can count them towards your total and set them aside. There is a bonus for getting seven cards in your run, but this is such a hard thing to do successfully!

We found Flip 7 to be an interesting card game, though not as accessible as Uno when it comes to playing with younger children. Amelia was very lucky when we played – she was able to get a run twice! Robin, however, wasn’t lucky and kept losing her run, which can be such a disheartening thing, especially when it happens almost instantly. We did like the different special cards, as they added a lot of strategy and variety to the game. Flip 7 is an interesting card game, it does feel accessible to a large age range, but at the same time it is one that older people will have a better logistical understanding of it – and there is a lot of luck involved! It’s not something I feel we will grab towards often, until Robin is a bit older, but we did like the variety for this card game.
