Family Dinner at Gonzos Tea Room

At the end of May, we celebrated our 5 year anniversary of being a family. Five years feels impossibly long, and we spent a lot of time this year reflecting on our lives. One of the things Dann and I wanted to do was re-visit our first family outing. You see, the first time we went out as a family unit, we went to the Norwich Gaming Festival and then had dinner at Gonzos Tea Room! At the time, Robin was so little that she didn’t really eat (nor does she remember much of it), where as Kai and Amelia had a very limited pallet. Going back with them being so much older was such a fantastic time and the food did not disappoint!

Chicken Wings at Gonzos Tea Room

Chicken wings are some of my favorite foods. It’s something we all enjoy now, which is always a lot of fun. We got three wings to try out, which all are quite different. Robin picked the peanut butter and jelly wings, which reminded me of the Nutella wings that Gonzos Tea Room use to have. These wings have a less sweet peanut butter coating, with a bit of sweetness given through a strawberry jam reduction. It’s very interesting, that’s for sure! I picked out the Sesame wings, which have a teriyaki-type sauce on them, which I knew Amelia would enjoy (she did), and also selected the Gonzos G.P. Wings, which were new, containing a spicy garlic and parmesan sauce, which was absolutely fantastic. I must say, this is probably one of the best wing sauces I have ever experienced.

The Gawd Damn Grizzly

Dann wanted to try out a tray of food, called the Gawd Damn Grizzly. This came with another side of wings (we got a second order of Gonzos G.P. Wings) along with a bunch of food on a tray. You get to select two meats, so Dann went with the beef brisket and the pulled pork. These meats were a bit on the dry side, though the BBQ sauce they came with was pretty good. The nduja mac n cheese was fantastic, with a bit of space, and the beans were filled with bacon and a touch of sweetness. There was also a big piece of bread, which we didn’t eat if I am honest! This try was very much shared, with Robin loving the mac n cheese, and both Amelia and Kai enjoying tasting the different meats.

More Food

Our main goal at Gonzos Tea Room was to order a bunch of food and just all share and enjoy it. We got some spinmach and artichoke dip, which was literally big enough to be a main. It tasted like a cheese dip and very quickly was enjoyed by our kids. The chips were really fresh too! We also ordered Pigs N’ Pickles, which was a smoky sausage with a bunch of homemade pickles. They were easy to eat and delicious. Kai was feeling particularly hungry, so ordered a burger called Henry Da 8th, which is a double beef patty, cheese, bacon, pickles, and “all the fixins” along with fries that he shared out with everyone. Kai really enjoyed this burger and ate most of it, to his own credit.

Gonzos Tea Room is named after a pug, called Gonzo. It’s a place that looks like a funky bar, with a lot of character. There are board games in the corner, movies or cartoons playing on TVs, and lots of *stuff* everywhere. It’s a really interesting place, though possibly one that wouldn’t be good for children late in the night. During the daytime, however, it’s a very unique place to get some American style food that you won’t find anywhere else!
