While out running some errands with a friend, Dann and I wanted to stop for a slightly bigger lunch as we had a busy day ahead. Wanting to try a pub we’ve seen a few times, we headed over to The Green Man Pub in Old Harlow. The Green Man Pub is in a historic 14th century Jacobean style building, with a lot of character to it. There is a dedicated car park, outdoor seating and plenty of indoor seating. It’s also dog friendly, with treats within one of the entrances.
We went on a soggy afternoon, when the pub was just starting to fill up. We sat ourselves down and checked out the dinner menu. They have a few highlighted beers and some specials that end up rotating along with a classic pub menu. Though we were there for lunch, we ordered off of the dinner menu as that’s what caught our eye.
Creamy Garlic Mushrooms
Dann and I split the creamy garlic mushrooms starter, which you can actually get as a main if you’d like. There were three large, flat field mushrooms drenched in a wild garlic sauce, over some toasted sourdough. It was a fantastic starter – so creamy and full of flavor.
Glazed Pork Belly
I am a big fan of pork belly so went for the glazed pork belly, which is glazed in a refreshing marmalade, served with mash, charred hispi cabbage, herb roasted carrots and gravy. It came out looking quite lovely! The charred cabbage was a bit strange, it felt like it needed some sort of dressing or the like to really make it shine. Otherwise, the pork was delicious and flavorful, the mash was very buttery. The gravy felt very British and savory, almost like there was some sort of alcohol cooked off in it, and the carrots did need a bit of seasoning. I quite enjoyed my main!
Mixed Grill
Dann went with a pub classic – Mixed Grill. This just has so many things on it; a rump steak, grilled chicken, gammon, Cumberland sausage, egg, chips, and tomato. He also got a peppercorn and brandy sauce to go with it. They cooked his rump steak to the right temperature and everything was well seasoned, his egg was runny. Dann commented that it felt a bit fancy compared to other mixed grills.
English Garden
Dann got a Guinness for his drink with his meal, and I got an English Garden cocktail. This was highlighted on their menu as a favorite. It’s got elderflower gin, apple juice, lime and mint – very refreshing and tasty. I quite enjoyed it!
The staff at The Green Man Pub were kind, it’s clearly got a local feel to it. Our friend got one of the specials; a pancetta lasagna, which he said was fantastic as well. The food all did feel well plated and fancy, especially for pub food, which always is a plus.
