[Ad- gifted product] Robin is a big reader in our household, as it’s one of her main hobbies. She even recently got to read to an anxiety dog at our local library, which really ties in well with Joe and Dusty Save the World – a children’s book all about a young boy with his own anxiety dog to guide him through life. As Robin is at an age where she can read on her own, I gave her the book and let her tell me about it whenever she was done with her daily reading.
Joe is the boy in the story and Dusty is his dog, who helps him feel calm and keep himself on track when it comes to doing household things that others might not need help with. There are a few pages talking about the relationship between Dusty and Joe, explaining how helpful a dog like Dusty can be and in what ways Joe is different from other kids his age, in his experience. Robin actually didn’t mention any of this when talking about the book, as to her, having people with differences are just apart of life – which is something that’s lovely to see.
Joe also has a few sisters, that all have different, highlighted hobbies, though this book is more focused on one specific adventure that Joe and Dusty have. One evening, while they are both asleep, Joe and Dusty are abducted by Aliens! This was Robin’s main focus when talking about the book, as she found the aliens to be funny and interesting. The aliens, as it turns out, had never had fun and no longer had emotions. This was something that Robin thought was strange, but Joe and Dusty helped the alien’s feel again.
This book is a rhythming book, but there are enough words on each page to make it a decent chapter book, which Robin read over the course of a week. The break down of chapters have some funny moments and wordplay, as well as more serious matters. The references within Joe and Dusty Save The World to people who might be a little different from the average are also fantastically written – some almost as just side notes about people Joe knows, which I do feel helps normalize everyone being different.
Robin enjoyed this book a lot and was happy that a young boy and his dog could save the world from aliens who don’t know emotions! She liked the drawings too, and how colorful each page was. I went through after and had a read, and do feel this is a great book for those who feel they might be a little different, those who might have friends that are a little different, or those who just like fun alien stories!
