[Ad- Collab] At the start of the year, I mentioned that I wanted to move this year. We would like to expand our family, get a bigger home and – personally – I’d like to really pick out the next house we end up in. The house that we currently live in was picked out by Dann, before I lived here, so I didn’t get to comment on the carpet in the bathrooms or the lack of space for our desks in the home. Now that we are looking for a new home – to rent – there are so many things I am keeping an eye out for, so I figured it would be fun to share my must haves.
Mudroom (Utility Room)
Often called a mudroom in America, I am a big fan of utility rooms for doing the washing and putting our shoes. We seem to have loads and loads of shoes, flip flops, boots, and more that clog up our hallway at the moment. I want to have a utility room where the laundry can be done, the shoes can have a proper home and things like Pancake’s catbox can live, away from the hustle and bustle of the house generally. I think that we are a big enough family to need one as well.
Less Carpets
After living in a house that has carpets in the bathrooms (they were big in the 90s, apparently) I’d like to live in a house with solid wood flooring. Pancake likes to scratch at carpets, though he doesn’t do it too much now, but I wouldn’t want him scratching up a new place because he is going to a new environment. Adding carpets would be easy, and it’s a lot less upkeep then an entire house of carpeted flooring!
Flat Back Garden
Our current garden isn’t very flat. This has been an issue when it comes to getting a trampoline or using a splash pad, so our next house needs to have a flat garden. I’d love to have room for both the splash pad and trampoline in the backyard, as well as some general room for gardening. Our garden has always been a mixed bag, as it’s quite large but at the same time, sort of unusable because of how slanted it is.
Playroom Space
Having toys all over the house can be a bit of a pain – I’d love to have a separate room that works as a playroom/living room, which will help keep the house organised and keep everything tucked away. This space might end up being the primary living room, with a second family room being turned into some sort of office so Dann and I can work near each other, from home. We aren’t quite sure how we would shuffle things (as we haven’t found a house) but having enough rooms to accommodate these spaces is very important.
Looking for a new house has been super stressful, to be honest, with all of these COVID restrictions in place. We really want to be moved before Christmastime – to a bigger and better house that we all enjoy. This house has done us well, but we’ve outgrown it ages ago, and would need a bigger home to expand our family anyway.
Love this post and totally agree with all the points ππ» My mum used to have a utility room in her old house which was the best! When I move out I defo want wooden floorboards over carpets! and Iβll need a garden which is super easy to maintain as Iβm not much of a gardener π€£
There are so many places with astroturf around here – but you need to VACUUM THEM?!? Madness.
I definitely agree about the mud room and less carpet! I definitely want hardwood in my future home because carpet just gets so messy so easily! I currently don’t have any yard now so a nice big flat backyard would be amazing π
Carpets are so hard to keep clean and looking fresh too! π A yard is a must.
Mudroom is a must for laundry, shoes, and whatever things you can store, for the meantime. Just close the door and deal with it the next day. And we don’t have carpets. Our flooring tiles are easy to clean, especially that we have furry babies. π
This is all so true!
Living in a house with less or no carpets is really much easier on the cleaning. While I miss the soft texture of carpets, they weren’t really fun to maintain and I got sick of the static fast. Good luck with the search!
Omg hard same. You can always add rugs that can then be fully removed and cleaned, which is so much easier.
