Polar Panic – Quick Matching Fun

[Ad- gifted product] Quick to carry around tabletop games are always ones that I find are perfect for the afterschool time between school ending and Kai’s DnD starting. We all bundle into our local Geek Retreat, grab a few milkshakes or sodas, and sit down to play games. Polar Panic was the latest on our list; the entire card game fits in a little tin, with the instructions in the lid, making it ideal for carry around with us!

Polar Panic is pretty simple. All of the cards need to be shuffled about and placed ice-side-up on a table. On your turn, you will flip over a card, then the next person will flip over a card and so on. If anyone sees two of the same fish out in the sea, they must rush to put their hands on both cards. If they are the first player to do so, they get both cards. If someone beats them to one, they get the card they got too. If you turn over a fisherman, you get to keep that card and turn all face-up cards back to their ice side and swish them about, before putting this card in your pile of cards you’ve earned. If someone reveals the polar bear, the game ends and you count up all the cards you’ve gotten.

The game itself is only as long as it takes to reveal the polar bear, which can be quick or can take up time. It’s really random! We played with our teens all the way to our 8 year old and everyone understood the game easily and had fun with it! It’s such a simple game that can be played anywhere, and the tin is really hearty, so I can see it taking a bit of a beating. I would say, you do need to have a lot of table space to spread out the entire ocean’s worth of cards, but we found having the cards slightly overlapping didn’t matter much, as everyone shuffled through them to grab ones they wanted to flip anyway.

Polar Panic is a very easy game to learn and very easy to play. I can see it being something brought around grandparent’s house for Christmas time, as it is themed slightly towards ice fishing and a game that could be easily taken on a holiday as well!

I used to love playing games like this with the kids when they were younger. They’ll all be here again for the holidays this year, and I think this could be a great addition to the festivities!

Good to know that 8 years and upwards understood and enjoyed the game. It looks loads of fun. One for the Christmas shopping list.
