While staying in Loch Ness with Abbey Holidays, we weren’t very interested in cooking our on food! The Bothy Bar and Restaurant is one we often passed going from Loch Ness to our accommodation. They offer a traditional Scottish menu and feel a lot like a community bar and restaurant, with tons of families inside. The place was absolutely packed when we arrived, so I didn’t get any pictures of the inside in the end, but people eating were sat in a conservatory on the side of the main building, which had a large bar. All of the specials were written on a giant chalk board next to the serving area for the staff. We were seated quite quickly, as they don’t take reservations, and went straight into looking at the menu.
Steak Dinner and Steak Pie

A lot of the food at The Bothy Restaurant and Bar was very much like any traditional pub food. I am not the hugest fan of pub food, so I wasn’t expecting much! Dann ordered a steak dinner, with a traditional sauce. The steak itself was well undercooked for what he asked for, but as Dann really enjoyed it anyway. For me, it would have been far too raw! I was surprised he enjoyed it like that. He wasn’t the biggest fan of the sauce and the vegetables on the side were pretty plain and unnoticeable. For my steak pie, I had a bunch of steak and grave under a big puff pastry. The steak was tender and delicious – I quite enjoyed the wine gravy as well. Both of our fries were well cooked and crispy, though they needed salt.
Lemon Meringue Pie and Rhubarb Crumble

We decided to grab some dessert at the end of our meal. I went with a rhubarb crumble as I was honestly really curious about it. This was marked as homemade but only contained Rhubarb. Where I am from, we always had rhubarb and raspberry or rhubarb and apple! Just rhubarb was a little on the tart side for a dessert, but it was very warm and there were options for ice cream, double cream or custard on top. I went with ice cream which went well with it. Dann got the lemon meringue pie with cream, which he very much enjoyed.
At the end of our dinner, we paid at the bar. I wouldn’t go back again, as the food is just not the type I really enjoy and the place was a little too packed for my liking, but if you are a fan of pub food, it’s a great option.
My oh my the good looks so delicious. Simple, but so good. Sometimes simplicity is all you really need. Amazing!
