7 Things to Do When You’re Bored at Home

Stuck at home endlessly scrolling social media> feel the boredom setting in? Try doing these seven things instead!

1. Have a Wild Cooking Experiment

Sometimes, the best way to beat boredom is to use the thighs you have right under your nose, and we all have food in the cupboards, right? The key is to not simply boredom eat Pringles like it’s your last meal, and to get up and check out what you have in the spice rack instead. Try experimenting with different flavours and textures, and whip up something you might not have thought about eating before, and…well, you won’t be bored for long.

2. Craft Like a Lunatic

When’s the last time you unleashed your inner Michelangelo? Grab all the junk around the house – old magazines, bottle tops, empty loo rolls – and get crafting. Create a mosaic portrait of the family dog, or whip up a DIY “masterpiece” that your nan might mistake for modern art. If your creation turns out to be more of a monstrosity than a masterpiece, just call it an avant-garde statement. Problem solved.

3. Bring Back Retro Fun

Remember Minesweeper? That unassuming little game that’s basically a 90s throwback to guesswork, frustration, and the eventual realisation you never truly knew what you were doing in the first place? Why not revisit it for a nostalgia trip? Better yet, delve into other vintage games: maybe you’ll finally beat the high score you set in Tetris back in 2003. Who needs flashy new releases when you’ve got pixelated brilliance on your side?

4. Create Your Own Board Game

If the oldies are getting, well, old, invent your own board game instead. Label some paper with ridiculous instructions like “give your best opera impression” or “do 20 star jumps while reciting the alphabet backwards.” Stick them on the floor as spaces, roll a die, and watch your housemates roll their eyes. It’s sillier than a clown at a business meeting, but hey, that’s half the fun.

5. Write the World’s Worst Novel

Ever find yourself itching to unleash your inner Shakespeare? Sit down at the keyboard and write something – anything – even if it’s a post-apocalyptic romance about talking hamsters and alien cheese. The point isn’t to get it published (unless it’s so magnificently awful it becomes an instant cult classic). The point is to let your imagination run wild and have a giggle at your own creative genius, or questionable lack thereof.

6. Rearrange Everything (Yes, Everything)

Feeling restless? Rearrange your room… or your living room… or your entire house. Just make sure you don’t block any doors or windows. A simple shift can make your space feel brand new – or at least confuse people enough to think they’ve walked into a parallel universe.

7. Embrace the Art of Doing Absolutely Nothing

Finally, let’s not forget that occasionally doing diddly-squat can be refreshing. Put down your phone, stare at the ceiling, and have a full-on daydream session. Sometimes, the best cure for boredom is realising you don’t always need to be busy.

Time at home doesn’t have to be time you find dull!
