Ahoy There! Card Game from Pop Up Pirate

Ahoy There!

[Ad- gifted product] We have a large card game and board game collection at our home, mainly because Dann and I have always played board games! Often, these types of games only really the two oldest children or the youngest child, but rarely is there a game simple enough to keep Robin’s attention but engaging enough to keep Amelia and Kai playing with her! We had high hopes when we got Ahoy There!, a card game from the makers of Pop Up Pirate.

Previously, we had a Pop Up Pirate, and it was played all the time, by everyone. This card game is much smaller, and has completely different rules while playing with the pirate theme. In Ahoy There, each player is given a colored treasure chest to put in front of them. This is where their treasure will go. In the middle of the playing area, a map card is placed down. Everyone is then dealt some cards, randomly, depending on the number of people playing. If there are less than 5 people, a deck of new cards goes in the middle.

Once everyone has their cards, they start being pirates! The player who shouts Ahoy There the loudest or first gets to go first, and then they steal a card from someone to the right. That person then steals a card from someone on their right, and so on around the circle. Once we get to the end, anyone who picked up a special card needs to resolve it – these cards are not treasure and instead are cards that allow you to steal someone else’s treasure chest or that curse you and force you to remove the last item from your treasure, for example. Once they are resolved, everyone can bank one card of their choosing into their chest, and then pass their entire hand left. The round starts again until nobody has anymore cards.

The rules are printed on slightly larger cards, and they are somewhat unclear, left for interpretation. We pulled out any cards that were special, when they were used, at first, but this forced people to lose their entire hand quite fast, as we played with max cards. Losing their hand means the game is over, but apparently one person shouldn’t lose their hand any faster than anyone else, which means that it is possible to be unable to bank treasure, and just be banking special cards. Sometimes I feel like these levels of simplicity just beg for you to make up your own rules and have fun with it.

We’ve played Ahoy There! quite a few times, and have really enjoyed it. The game is simple enough for Robin to understand, but Amelia and Kai love trying to bank the most treasure and find the card worth 25 points. There are some really high value cards like that, as well as some that give you double the amount of gems you bank, etc. At the end of the game, your treasure is all added up and a winner is determined.

Ahoy There! is a fun game, that is small enough to fit into a bag and take with you, wherever you go, and simple enough that you just need to remind kids about the rules, and then they can play it themselves, without needing help or you to play with them. It’s a great game that our whole family enjoys.
