Eating Pastries at Aida

Dann and I don’t often get to cafes when we visit other countries, but as we were being shown around by some friends, they had selected Aida as a place we couldn’t miss! Aida is a sort of Instagram-able cafe that has a few different locations, which some being more set up for Instagram pictures than others. This specific cafe is known for bringing Austria’s first espresso machine into operation, being ahead of the curve when it came to coffee consumption!

Coffee

I am not a huge coffee drinker in general, but do enjoy a good coffee from time to time. At Aida, on the menu, they have different cups of coffee that show the amount of espresso, cream, foam, whipped cream, milk, etc so that you can really tell exactly what you are getting! It’s such a neat way of having a menu and is so clear. Dann got a shot of expresso, then a coffee that had a bit of alcohol in it, along with whipped cream and milk. I got a very milky coffee that had whipped cream on top! Every place that we got coffee at in Austria also gave us a small glass of water to go with it, which was neat too. These coffees were clearly well made and tasted good too.

Vegetarian Breakfast, Poppy Seed Bagel and Cheese Pastry

When it came to more savory bites, our friends got the vegetarian breakfast which had two layers, with a bunch of cheeses, a soft boiled egg, some tomatoes and some bread. This was well presented and had a good number of savory items that you could dig into. They also got a cheese filled pastry that looked very delicious! Dann went for a savory item as well, grabbing a “poppy seed bagel” which is the middle picture. This bagel is nothing like what I expected, but was what he expected, so there is that. The filling was sort of dry, thick, and very much poppy seed. The outside was very crunchy!

Many Cakes at Adia

Adia had a bunch of different cakes on each floor of the restaurant. We sat upstairs, as downstairs was for takeaway, and I went up to the counter to see what I wanted instead of using the menu. This was recommended by us, as you could see all of the different offerings and what was fresh that day. We all did end up getting cakes and sharing with each other! Dann got a warm, baked cheese cake with a bunch of fruit on top. This was soft, fruity and delicious – not too sweet at all. Next, a friend got this sort of layered cream pastry, which had a pop-out description on the menu of how it was invented! The cream was both sweeter and thicker than I expected. I got a honey cake, which was soft, yet crumbly, with a good amount of sweetness. I also got a blueberry cheesecake which had a no-bake texture. This was my favorite item – so soft and perfectly blueberry. Our friend also grabbed this tiny, cute rum cake which packed a hit of rum, yet was sweet. It was a dense cake – but very fun!

Aida is a fantastic cafe for those who like coffee and cake! There isn’t anything hot on the menu, but there is a good variety with plenty to choose form. We also very much liked that the menu talked about the history of so many of the different pastries that you could purchase there, giving a good reason on why they are popular and how they were invented.
