Bouquet Cupcake Class with Sweet Designs by Jennie

Each month, Amelia and I take a little mother-daughter time going to a cupcake class, to decorate a bunch of cupcakes. We have been going for quite some time now, but we still find a class we haven’t taken each month to enjoy, primarily due to the new classes that Sweet Designs by Jennie is always coming up with! The bouquet cupcake course was one that Amelia was particularly interested in, as we primarily have done classes that had a lot of fondant work, and this class was all about piping!

When we arrived, things were a little different then the previous classes. With our other boxes and wreaths, there hasn’t been much work on creating the sort of box that the cakes will be in. With the Bouquet Cupcake Course, we went straight into making the thing that would hold our cupcakes. This required us to stable together cups and stick them to a board, before wrapping the whole thing in tissue paper and plastic, to make a very fun outside for a bouquet. This entire bit of design made them extremely impressive and different looking – I cannot believe we’ve never done this before!

When it comes to actually icing the cakes, I must say, unlike Amelia – I do not like piping. I have never enjoyed piping and I get frustrated quite easily with it. This entire class was all about piping, and though we had a lot of practice time, I still struggled and felt that a lot of the things I was piping wasn’t turning out great at all! Jennie, being a lovely host, did explain things slowly, repeatedly showed us what to do, and complemented a lot of the piping work we did. Some of the piping was done directly on the cakes, though we could scrape them off and start over if we needed to, while others were done on parchment paper and transferred onto the cake once they had set up.

There was a variety of different piping techniques shown to us by Jennie during this class. We made some sunflowers with lots of little yellow pedals that are pipped directly onto the cake, along with bigger flowers with large pedals, which we has been at previous classes, that were transferred over. Amelia and I both found the two-toned flowers, something we have never done before, to be our absolute favorite. The hard part with that one is adding the frosting into the bag correctly, then it’s just about piping steadily and the tip does the rest of the work!

In the end, adding in the green leaves covered up any sort of mistakes we had made, which felt like it brought everything together. Though I did find this class to be a challenge (as did Amelia) we both had a fun time and the conversations were fantastic. Sweet Designs by Jennie runs these classes as little, six people courses. The generally chatting feels very friendly and fun, making it a great environment to enjoy decorating some delicious cakes. We are both already looking forward to our class next month as well!

It’s always so much fun having you both here! I know this wasn’t your favourite, but you both did brilliantly and produced the most beautiful bouquets. Really looking forward to the next one!
