Eating Pastries in Café Central

In Austria, we had a lot of pastries in well known places. One of these places were Cafe Central – a cafe with a line all the way around the block. We had a local showing us around, so we were able to know when the line wouldn’t be so long, and got there in time for first seating at breakfast! Some of their menu is only available at lunchtime, while other aspects of their menu are specific for breakfast, so it is worth making sure they have the foods you’d like to try when you go. We were very excited to eat here as the pastries looked SO stunning! I do not know the name of any of the cakes we had as we went up to the window and pointed at the ones we wanted to try.

Ham on Toast

I wanted to start off with something savory at Cafe Central, so I went with a cranberry ham on toast situation. This toast was buttered, which was a good choice as it wasn’t dry. The topping isn’t butter or cheese but horseradish, which is extremely interesting! I found the sweetness in the ham well balanced with the spicy horseradish. It’s a great little starter that isn’t so sweet, before tucking into a bunch of desserts. Dann and I shared these.

Chocolate Plum Cake

My favorite cake that I ended up trying at Cafe Central was a plum covered with a thin layer of chocolate and some nuts. The plum was delicious – the perfect amount of sweetness. There was nougat in the dessert, which was a fantastic texture and the whole thing was just so beautiful.

Flaky Chocolate Cake

This cake from cafe central was a chocolate mousse cake, which had some white chocolate and milk chocolate mousse, flakes of chocolate, and a very light chocolate cake to go with it. For a chocolate cake, with so many layers of chocolate (including dark chocolate flakes on top), this felt not to heavy or decadent, which was delicious! I very much liked the structure of this cake.

An Almond-y Cake

This cake was primarily picked for Dann! It’s a cake that has a thick layer of marzipan in it, which has an almond-y taste to it. I love the chocolate coin on top of this one, which looked so pretty. The cake itself was denser than others, due to the marzipan I think, but it was a very well made cake and Dann really loved it.

Layered Cream Cake

This cake from Cafe Central was such an interesting texture! There were layers of thick, very vanilla cream in between layers of crispy, sweet pastry. It cracks open and ends up making a bit of a mess, but is so delicious and such fun textures as well. I liked how light and simple it was. Many of the cakes had chocolate, so having a few options without any chocolate was nice as well.

Mirror Glazed Cake

This mirror glazed cake from Cafe Central was absolutely stunning! It had freckles of vanilla in the glaze, a purple woosh at the bottom, a little chocolate logo at the top. It’s just a stunning cake! The inside is filled with mousse and a little bit of cake, which is such a great texture. This cake was subtle in flavor, but very delicious and fun to eat.
