Amelia and I are always looking forward to the cupcake decorating classes by Sweet Designs by Jennie. This Christmas Character Cupcake Class is our final class of the year, but we got to see a sneak peak at one of the new classes coming in January, and we are really excited to get to decorating! The Christmas Character Cupcake Class was one of four winter / Christmas themed classes that Jennie was running. As always, the cupcakes were pre-baked, the fondant was already colored, and we all sat down to enjoy a few hours of creating decorations.
The Christmas Characters Cupcake Class had three face characters, two sculpted individual item cupcakes and one flat, round topper. These primarily had fondant work, which is always quite fun, and we hadn’t done that many big faces before! We made an elf, with pointy ears, Santa, and a snowman for our faces. Sweet Designs by Jennie had a texturing tool that gave the hats a wool look, which I struggled with so hard, but it was a very interesting and new way to imprint. The round topper that had words on it had a background, which was done by combining strips of two colored fondant, trimming a circle with a fluted edge, and then opening up the fluted edge with a tool. I honestly thought this was all piped when looking at the picture!
When it came to the fondant designs that we needed to mold, the candy canes were really a challenge. The two strips of color, for both me and Amelia, just didn’t want to come together. I think we’d be able to do better if we had more practice! The presents, which are just cubes of fondant, was much easier. Then we did a bit of piping for those two cupcakes, creating backgrounds for the fondant pieces to go onto.
The Christmas Characters Cupcake Class results in some very adorable cupcakes. I really like the snowman and elf particularly, and it is such a fun time! Amelia is always very proud of the cupcakes she designs and molding with fondant felt very new, with new techniques. Sweet Designs by Jennie is a very casual class, without rushing and with a lot of just chatting. As we have been a number of times now, we have started to get to know the other regulars, so conversations are really fun to have! It’s a fantastic way to spend an evening and come home with some tasty treats, which our whole family enjoys.
