After going to Coventry Market with our kids, they asked about going to another Christmas market. London always feels so busy this time of year, so we decided to go back to the Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham, which Dann and I remember as being one of the best, as we went last year on a double date. When we arrived in Birmingham, we actually walked through a smaller Cathedral Square Church Market, making our way to Frankfurt Christmas Market, which we returned back too.
Frankfurt Christmas Market
Starting at Frankfurt Christmas Market, we had a big look around. This is a more traditional, German or Bavarian market, with lots of traditional food. We all came here for dinnertime, and with the number of food stands, it’s a great place to start. I marched all the way over to the potatoes and mushroom stand, which is my absolutely favorite, and felt like a great place to start. The market was set up exactly the same as last year! We got some fried potatoes and mushrooms with garlic sauce, which everyone enjoyed. We then grabbed some drinks at the stand next to it. The Frankfurt Christmas Market has these sort of collectable cups; Kai and Robin got hot chocolate in them, Dann got a wine with burning sugar, and Amelia and I got sodas. We returned two of the collectable cups and kept one for memories.
Kai then picked out where to go next; he wanted a giant, foot long hot dog that he saw someone else carrying around. This hotdog was massive and he ended up giving everyone a few bites as it was so big. Robin then saw a pretzel stand right next door that had lots of pretzel sandwiches and the like. She wanted a sugar and cinnamon pretzel which had very soft dough, more like a donut, and was very delicious.
We then stumbled upon the chocolate covered stuff stand; Dann got a strawberry chocolate covered chili pepper, which Kai and I also tried. It was spicy and sweet, very odd. Feels like something you’d purchase as a dare. Robin and Amelia both got strawberry chocolate covered strawberries, with a surprise grape at the top. Kai got a chocolate covered banana with white chocolate. We then continued walking around the side. The Frankfurt Christmas Market feels like it goes on forever, with live music, a massive bar, a massive Christmas tree and a merry-go-round.
Lastly for this market, we grabbed some candied nuts. I got cherry almonds which Amelia and I enjoyed, where as Robin picked strawberry and white chocolate almonds, which she didn’t like at all. I was surprised she decided to pick out some nuts, as we don’t really eat nuts, but was happy she was trying new things. This inspired Dann to purchase a bunch of nuts to try through on Boxing Day, which will be exciting! We also picked up some currywurst, which feels very traditional, and ended up being Robin’s absolute favorite thing.
Cathedral Square Market
After eating our way through the Frankfurt Market, we moved on to the Cathedral Square Market. This market feels more like a British Christmas Market, and we were mainly there for one thing; tornado potatoes. These tornado potatoes were actually cut in front of us, so they were really fresh. With that in mind, they took a little longer than we are use to and weren’t as crunchy at all. A bunch of the bottom of Amelia’s potato wasn’t cooked to our likely either. Robin got a spicy potato stick, which she shared with Kai (she’s really into trying new things when we are out!) Where as Amelia got classic BBQ. Dann also picked up some buffalo chicken and chips, which he shared with Kai.
At that point, everyone declared that they were full, so we wondered around a bit more to look at the item stalls. The Cathedral Square Market had more Christmas Gift stalls then the Frankfurt Market, which was fun to see. Robin also went on the big slide ride, which she declared was super fast. We then went on our way home! It’s so much fun to explore places like this with our children and we had a fantastic time trying all of the food. I’m so glad they enjoy eating their way through places like Dann and I do.
You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
I’ve been to Birmingham a few years ago, not on Christmas though, such a beautiful city…I can’t wait to go there again, can’t wait.
That is awesome that you were able to visit a Christmas market. My son visited Europe last summer and has wanted to return to see a Christmas market.
I have always wanted to go.to a traditional German Christmas market! This is so beautiful!
