As a part of creating new traditions with our family, we decided to go to the same Christmas Tree farm as last year: Christmas Wrapped Up. We ended up spending the afternoon picking out a tree. There is something so special about being able to walk around a plot of trees, taking a look at each one before picking out the one you want – as I said before, last year was the first time that the children got to do it, so this year it was still incredibly new to them. As you might expect, trees are all quite different, although we went with a very specific tree in mind, something that was big and would fill up our living room. After clearing some space in our home and getting all of our decorations together, we set off.
Christmas Wrapped Up has a bunch of different precautions set up for Covid. You must wear a mask inside the building and they provide washed fabric gloves, which reduce the risk of contamination when you touch any of their ornaments. Firstly, we walked around outside, finding and picking out a tree. Once we found one just tall enough (okay, maybe a bit too tall) we decided to go with it.
When we look for trees, we tend to want trees that have a lot of branches near the top and look great when fanned out. It’s so much easier to see what tree you are ending up with when you look at it all on display, still relatively ‘open’, rather than when they’re bagged.
A staff member at the farm came over and reserved the tree for us, giving us a ticket to pay for the tree while they wrapped it up on their very cool packaging machine. Inside the building we took a look around, and each of us picked an ornament for the tree. There are a lot of ornaments to choose from, in various sections that are colour-themed, and there seemed to be different ones from last year too. Last year, Robin went with a bird, Amelia went with a rainbow bauble, and Kai went with a plane. This year, Robin went for a shimmering rocking horse, Amelia went for a snow-covered bauble, and Kai picked out a glittering, red bauble. When you shop at Christmas Wrapped Up, on the way out (or normally outside) you can pick up a free hot apple cider, something all three of the kids look forward to. There was also a food stand outside but we were happy having lunch at home. It’s worth noting that this year they have a potato bin, where you can pay what you want as a donation to the British Heart Foundation, for some locally grown spuds.
After we paid for our tree and ornaments, we went out and grabbed our wrapped tree. The staff brought it to our car and placed it in, which was very kind of them. All of the staff at Christmas Wrapped Up were extremely kind, and really seemed to enjoy working there. They were actively looking out for people who have selected their tree and greeting people to show that they were willing to help – even if that meant carrying a tree across the road and well into the parking lot. You can, of course, have your tree delivered to your door too.
When we got home, we set up our tree, cutting it out of the bag. You do need to let your tree rest and settle before decorating it, as they take a while to reset from being bunched up in the bag. We all decorated as a family, with the kids primarily picking out what went on the tree and where. It’s been really fun watching them decide where things go – even if they do end up a bit clustered. The children remembered their ornaments from last year, especially Kai, and put those on the tree first, along with ones that they really loved from Jupiter’s vast collection.
We had a fantastic time out and really enjoyed picking out a new tree, it was great that they had extra measures in place, and that we had another opportunity to all get out of the house together. Both the children and Pancake have quite enjoyed the tree in the front room, even if it’s slightly too big.
This post is apart of our Blogmas series, with each and every post being about Christmas or Winter.
However, beware: Most towns won’t take trees that are wrapped in any un-organic material, like the plastic disposal bags. So if you want to be neat about disposal, wrap the tree in craft paper before hauling it out to the curb.
What a great tip!
Aw this is such a lovely story and so nice to see that you enjoyed the experience despite the current situation. These pictures are lovely! Thank you for sharing x
This is such a nice story! I’ve never had a real tree but I’d love to go one day with my own family and choose one. Thanks for sharing.
