Exploding Kittens – Easy, Luck-Based Card Game

Exploding Kittens board game box

[Ad- gifted product] I feel like everyone has heard of Exploding Kittens, a card game known for having cute yet strange cat-related artwork on each one! Exploding Kittens is created by the same developers as Power Hungry Pets, but was their first ever tabletop game. Somehow, we have never played Exploding Kittens; likely as when the game came out, it would have been too complex for Robin. As we have all grown older, it made sense to finally pick up a copy and play it for ourselves.

Exploding Kittens is a very easy game to actually play. On your turn, you can play as many action cards as you’d like, then select a card from the draw pile. The issue is, the draw pile might have an exploding kitten card. If you draw an exploding kitten, you will be exploded and lose the game, unless you have a defuse card. If you have a defuse card, you are able to defuse the exploding kitten, then place it anywhere you want in the deck. This basically goes on until everyone has been exploded and one person is left.

Where things get interesting are through action cards. You can use actions like Nope to ruin what someone else is playing, cards to shuffle the discards and draw from them, cards to skip your turn, and cards to force others to have two turns. There are other cards in the game that have no actions and are primarily used to create pairs. If you have a pair of any cards (either ones that have no action or action cards) you can play them to steal secretly from another player’s hand. It’s a game of using your actions, keeping hold of some defuse cards, and hoping your draw isn’t going to explode on you!

We played Exploding Kittens at our local Geek Retreat, on one of our family board game nights! Kai got really into the game and started being super strategic and using his cards very wisely, where as Amelia and Robin quite enjoyed the artwork and found the game to be slightly more challenging. We had a fun time playing through this classic and do feel it will have a breath of life, especially with the Netflix animated show out now.

This game sounds incredibly engaging and strategic! The action cards add a fun twist, allowing players to disrupt each other and strategize their moves. The ability to steal cards and the suspense of drawing cards makes it exciting. I can’t wait to try it out and see how the gameplay unfolds!
