Every month, Amelia and I have some mother-daughter time taking a cupcake course. We’ve been doing this for quite some time, and as Jennie never runs out of ideas and we always have a fantastic time, we were back once again for one of the newer designs; Fairy Cupcakes. This class was warned to be a bit longer than the previous ones we have attended, due to all the intricate little designs we were going to hand craft for these packed cupcakes. Sweet Designs by Jennie is always running these cupcake courses, with a large number of different designs, both seasonal and non-seasonal.

We started out as always – with the cupcakes baked on our table, a drink from Jennie, and lots of tools placed out. This course was going to be a lot of fun based on the picture and all of the tools. There were some favorites like the flower press that makes very neat flowers and some new plunges with designs, as well as textures, for us to really get into. This class was, in fact, quite long! We started off with fondant, as always, to give it time to firm up. The fondant was used for the platform for the fairy, the sign for fair gardens, then we created some mushrooms. Amelia really shined in the mushroom portion – she does like sculpting so much, so it was perfect for her. Jennie did a fantastic job of guiding us through the mushrooms so they all turned out looking great. We made a caterpillar and used a new tool; editable markers to make the face.

We also made our butterflies and flowers, which sat on a special foam thing, so that they would gain some shape and look like the butterflies were flying and the flowers were caught in some wind. Once those were set up, we went towards the thing I felt was going to be the most challenging; the actual fairy. Though Sweet Designs by Jennie had a cute and well made fairy, I just didn’t believe we would be able to really capture that cute-ness. Especially as we had no experience making characters. But, Jennie did a fantastic job of breaking the fairy down into parts; we did the body, then the legs, then the neck, then the dress, then the head, then the hair. It was interesting seeing that the tool that we had previously used for leaves was the perfect thing for hair! Amelia went off script and created her own fairy, using the fondant like clay, which is always fun to see.

Sweet Designs by Jennie does a fantastic job of keeping things easy and casual feeling. It’s like a group of friends all hanging out and creating something fun! This time, Amelia and I didn’t know anyone else in the class as there were some new-comers, but we had a fun time getting to know everyone over the time we spent together. It’s just a fantastic way to spend time together and we get yummy cakes out of it! We are booked in for the next two months too, as classes book up so quickly now – make sure you are following Sweet Designs by Jennie on Facebook to get on her lists.
