Harlow Chinese School Cooking Course – Wonton Soup with Noodles

We have actually previously done a wonton course at the Harlow Chinese School, previously creating both fried and soup wontons. Even though we had previously attended, we were both excited to come back! The meat in the middle of these wontons were different and so was the broth, so it sounded like a good time to us. The Harlow Chinese School is running their cooking club every other month this year and we are aiming to attend all of them!

Our teacher, Sun, explained what was in the meat filling (and in the vegetarian filling which was on the vegetarian table) and how to season them yourself. This filling was pork only, not pork and prawns, which was different from last time. Once she was done explaining how to make the meat, she explained how to make the broth and soup, which had cabbage in it, along with a new topping which was a type of purple seaweed.

Then, we were all given a bunch of wonton wrappers and left to wrap our own. Wontons is a sort of practice more and you will get better type of food. For boiled wontons, like in soup, you do need to ensure that you’ve rolled them tight and pinched the middle, otherwise they can break apart while they are in the soup. It’s quite fun pinching together wontons! These are in a different style to the ones I made growing up, so it was great to practice them again. Dann and I created all of our wontons before we handed them off to be boiled in the kitchen.

They had a new system where we were given numbers and used those numbers to know when our order was ready. Our wontons were cooked in the broth then spooned over a bunch of egg noodles with cabbage and the topping. Our table also had vinegar, soy sauce and some chili oil to add to our own taste. I really enjoy soups and like pork wontons! The wontons for me could have had more garlic, but overall they tasted very good and it was so fun to eat and create food with so many like minded people. We are so looking forward to the next one! A lot of the fun around the Harlow Chinese School Cooking Courses are actually just hanging out with other people and slowly making the food. Sun is a great teacher and is able to explain everything well, but she’s done a lot of the prep work, leaving the fun bits and the eating to us.

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!

That sounds like the most awesome time ever! I’ve always shied away from trying to cook Chinese food because it seems so daunting. This would be so cool.
