There are lots of different places in Vienna, Austria to eat cakes! One of the more fancy locations is Hotel Sacher, which has one of those famous chocolate cakes. Outside the cafe part of the hotel, there is always a long queue of people waiting to get in to eat. We didn’t have to wait too long in the queue, due to the time of day that we went, which was a plus! Even with a long wait, if you are a fan of cakes, it’s well worth it. They give you a big menu that has a bit of history in it and the seating inside is very full but beautiful. It’s a lovely place for desserts! We shared a bunch of cakes so we all could try everything, which was a fantastic idea.
Sacher Cube
The Sacher Torte is the world-famous cake at Hotel Sacher, but a much better version (according to our guides) were the Sacher Cube. This was a bit of cake encased in chocolate. It was moist, the jam was nice and tarte cutting through the chocolate, and it was truly delicious. The chocolate decoration on the top was a bit on the thick side, making it hard to dig into the cake without taking it off. Otherwise, it was a very delicious bite!
Punch Dessert

Our friend called this a punch dessert, which is a small, chocolate encased cake that is soaked in rum. It had a lot of warming spices in it’s taste, along with a big hit of rum! The chocolate coin on the top was still too thick for me. The chocolate on the outside felt perfect and the cake had a strong taste – exactly what you’d expect for a rum cake.
Topfenstrudel
We also ordered the Topfenstrudel with warm vanilla sauce, which is a very traditional dessert. It’s got a bunch of apple inside flaky pastry, covered in powdered sugar. It was very tasty, well made, and the size of the dessert was quite big! The warm vanilla was slightly sweet, adding a good flavor to it.
Viennese spiced Gugelhupf
The Viennese spiced Gugelhupf was a Bundt cake, coated in a thin shell of chocolate and some shaved nuts. The inside of the cake was a little on the dry side, but it had a fantastic spiced flavor and felt like a very warming cake. This would go ideal with a hot drink! It feels quite fun to eat as well, but maybe I just feel that way about round things with holes in the centre.
Sacher Torte Cocktail
As Sacher Hotel is so known for it’s chocolate Sacher torte, it makes sense that they have a signature drink inspired by the cake as well. I have to say, when I think of chocolate cocktails, I think of something heavy, dairy-filled, and often very sweet. The Sacher Torte Cocktail is not that at all! This drink was light, refreshing, and still had a chocolate and fruity twist. I really, really liked this drink so very much and would recommend it!
