How to take care of your hardwood flooring

*AD/Collaboration, but as always, all views are my own.

When it comes to getting hardwood flooring put into your home, once it is installed, you’ll want to keep your floor in the best condition possible so that your floor can last as long as you live in your home. There are a lot of little quirks when it comes to maintaining your hardwood flooring that you just might not be aware of or might not think about as it’s different from cleaning other floors in your home. I am going to be sharing my top tips on keeping your floor clean and in-tact.

Liquid is not your friend

Anytime there is a spill on your hardwood flooring, you’ll want to wipe it up as soon as possible. Letting liquid soak into your flooring can do damage over time, even if your flooring has an oil or lacquer on it. You might think, but what about mopping? You shouldn’t be mopping your wooden floor. You should sweep away any dirt and dust, before wiping marks or stains away with a microfiber cloth and possible a bit of floor cleaner if you have something tough to get out. Using a mop can allow excessive amounts of liquid to seep into your floor, which just isn’t good.

Avoid scuffs and scratches

When you put furniture on your hardwood flooring, you are going to want to put anti-scratch pads under the foots of these items, if they aren’t resting on a rug. This ensures that furniture being moved around, even if it’s just through day to day use, doesn’t mark up your floors. Small dents and marks are inevitable, but taking extra measures can really make the difference when it comes to the life of your floor. Speaking of scuffs, if you do want to vacuum your hardwood flooring, you need to ensure that you have the right vacuum attachment, so that you don’t cause surface scratches when running the vacuum about.

Refreshing your floor

When it comes to completely refreshing the look and feel of your floor, it really depends on the type of wooden flooring you have. If you have an oil finished wooden flooring, you can just add more oil to refresh small scratches and make the floor look new and clean. You’ll need to first clean the floor thoroughly after moving all of the furniture out, then apply oil and let the oil dry for the set amount of time on the oil you have purchased, before returning the furniture. This is the easiest floor to refresh. When it comes to a lacquer finished floor, you’ll need to sand down the top layer of the floor, then apply more lacquer, cleaning between each step. This will allow a lot of surface scratches to be fixed and refreshed, however if you have scratches deeper than the surface, you’ll want to contact a professional to have the floor properly (and evenly) buffed before being finished again.

Keeping your hardwood flooring in good condition does take a bit of work, but can be easily managed as long as you know what you are doing and put in the extra work! As hardwooden flooring is timeless and always looks lovely, it’s well worth the effort.

    Thanks for sharing!

Rest assured that wood floor maintenance is quick and easy. Proper maintenance is essential to keep wood floors looking beautiful and performing well for the lifetime of the floor. Routine cleaning involves sweeping, dust mopping, or vacuuming using the bare floor setting to remove dust and dirt.
