Karate Cats and Kung Fu Dogs is chaotic Slap!

Karate Cats and Kung Fu Dogs

[Ad- gifted product] Every other Monday, we like to play a board game at our local Geek Retreat. This week, we had a copy of Karate Cats and Kung Fu Dogs to play together! Dann, Robin, Amelia and I were excited about this game just by the name; we love cats, we love dogs, and we love the idea of them knowing martial arts.

Karate Cats and Kung Fu Dogs is a card-based game that seems to be inspired by the game Slap, but without the huge risk of children hitting each other. This game starts off by giving each player a portion of the deck of cards. This is placed face down in front of the player, so they cannot see the cards. In the middle of the playing area, there are four coasters; two dogs and two cats. These each have a different color, but both the dogs and cats do look extremely similar, which is all apart of the game itself.

One person is picked to go first, based on their Kung Fu pose, and that person gets a little token. On their turn, they place the top card of their deck face up, and then it continues around the circle to all the players. If it gets back to the first player, they then place their second card on top of their previous card. At any point, if three cards are face up on the table that all have the same cat or dog character, everyone needs to race to karate chop that specific coaster.

Karate Cats and Kung Fu Dogs has more than just these cute cat and dog cards. There is a sleeping card that, when placed out, nobody can chop anything until it’s covered again. A bone or fish card being shown makes everyone race to chop a cat or dog, respective of their treat. If you chop the wrong character, you will end up with everyone’s discards. If you chop too slow when you are meant to chop, the two people that chop correctly will get to decide how to split their cards between the other players. It’s a race to get rid of all of your cards, which can be done quite quickly as the entire game is very fast paced.

Amelia and Robin both loved the art designs on Karate Cars and Kung Fu Dogs and found the game itself to be really fun. As the coasters look similar, we found ourselves slipping up and chopping the wrong icons from time to time, which made the game fun and it hard to predict who was going to win. It’s very simple to pick up and play too, which is a great bonus.
