[Ad- gifted product] As the sun is shining and the birds are, as always, doing their big chirps in the morning, everyone seems to be trying to spend more time in their garden! As we have been organising our garden too, we decided to make some treats for the lovely birds that have been chirping in our front yard, in hopes that they will wander back to the back yard and play outside there. These bird feed balls are easy to make, nice to hang up and feel like slime when you are creating them – so if any of your little ones like making slime, they’ll probably be interested in helping out.
Materials:
- Bird seeds of your choice
- String – I used cotton macrame rope from Rope Source
- Lard
- Any leftover nuts or dried fruit you’d like to add. We had some pistachios.
These are pretty easy to make and just take a ratio. You want two parts seeds/nuts to one part lard, in volume. This means if you are using a drinking cups worth of lard, you should use two drinking cups worth of your seeds and nuts. You’ll need to add your room temperature lard into a bowl, then add your seeds/nut/fruit mix. Once you have everything in the same bowl, you can start string it together, but you’ll really need to get your hands in there and mix it in. When everything is well combined, you can set aside.
I took the string and made a knot at the end, then formed a ball of bird feed around the knot. Once the ball was of a good side, I looped the rope around the ball, pushed it slightly into the ball, and then tied the top, so that there was string left over to hang the ball from a tree.
Once it’s all put together, you’re done and can go hang this treat in your tree or other parts of your yard! It’s simple, easy, and a nice craft for all ages to try.
Wow, these look so much fun to make – my daughter would love these, especially as she’s into slime! Thank you for sharing π
