Finding Vegan Food at Margarito Grill Market

While in Bilbao, Spain, one of the big struggles for the group of friends I was hanging out with was vegan options. There just isn’t a lot of places that have lots of nice vegan dishes that are ready to eat! Margarito Grill Market, however, has more vegan options then it has meat options, which was quite a fantastic discovery. The main menu worked in a way where you selected a main meal, sauce, then two sides, which could create some interesting combinations! There were also burger options or salads if you preferred that. All of the food at Margarito Grill Market felt very fresh, clean and healthy.

I am a huge fan of mushrooms, so when I saw marinated oyster mushrooms as an option for the “main” on my plate, I went for it. These mushrooms were a very good texture and the marinade was filling and earthy, creating a very good mushroom! I also got the curry button mushrooms as a side, which were very curry forward, with zucchini and onion mixed in. for my other side, I got fried cauliflower with teriyaki sauce, which were very crispy and delicious. For my sauce, I picked mango and mustard, which I put on my salad. The bread that came with it didn’t come with butter, but was good too.

My vegan friend, Andrew, got the mixed plate as well; with marinated tofu as his main, sweet potato grilled as a side and roasted potatoes with aioli as well. Being a vegan for many years, he really enjoyed his dishes and it looked quite lovely too.

Drinks and Dessert

For my drink, I got a smoothie that had raspberries and blueberries in it, which was light and refreshing. when it came to the dessert menu, there actually is only one vegan dessert, which was a bit of a letdown as so much of the menu is actually vegan! The vegan option was a brownie with nuts in it and chocolate sauce. Andrew got this and said it was very good, but that he would like more options. I got the creme brulee which was mango and coconut, with coconut shavings on top. It wasn’t too sweet, but the texture was a bit strange!

We really enjoyed our time at Margarito Grill Market and appreciated how many vegan options there were. The whole place felt very upscale, though some of the plate combinations could turn out weird; especially if you are eating hummus and spaghetti!
