Amelia has expressed interest in spending more one on one time with me, since becoming a teenager. She has different interests then Kai and Robin, so we’ve been going to things together that entertain both of our hobbies. The latest activity she wanted to try out was the Piped Flowers Class with Sweet Designs by Jennie. Amelia is always in the kitchen with me, but much prefers baking to cooking, so decorating felt like the natural next thing.
Sweet Designs by Jennie is an individual baker, who hosts little classes of six people in her home, to learn how to decorate cakes. I was very interested in some of the fondant courses, but Amelia really wanted to try the Piped Flowers Class, and that date fit best in our busy schedule anyway, so we booked it up. The class itself was at Jennie’s house, with it’s own back entrance to a cozy room full of everything we would ever need. There were pipping bags, pipping tips, a bunch of buttercreams in different colors, a box of cupcakes, a picture of the cupcakes we were designing for reference, tools and so much more. It’s a great way to experience cupcake decorating, especially as you don’t need to invest in the tools before you’re unsure.
After we said our hellos and got a drink, Sweet Designs by Jennie started instructing us! A lot of the class was practicing the flowers and pedals, which do take a lot of practice to get right. Jennie spent a lot of time slowly showing us how to hold piping tips and what angle to use them as. We started off with the flower that has us piping individual flowers one pedal at a time, then attempted to pipe flowers using a tip that sort of stamps them. We also worked on leaves which were the easiest and a big, sort of flat flower that had a different type of pedal that we needed to pipe out one at a time.
The Piped Flowers Class did move onto the cupcakes, as we were decorating them! We got to transfer two of our first flowers from parchment paper onto our cupcakes, before adding in finer details. The rest of the cupcakes had us piping in directly. There were lots of room for asking for questions and Sweet Designs by Jennie was very casual in the way the class was. I’ve been to cooking classes that were very instructional, with no real room to go at your own pace or even feel comfortable with what you are doing, but this class wasn’t that. It felt fantastic in pacing, with the end time being quite flexible too. Everyone was made to feel included and it was very fun! If you are looking for a casual time out, no matter what your experience level in cupcake decorating is, this class is truly enjoyable.
You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
You ladies did an amazing job! Your frosting came out so pretty! I should take this class to up my frosting game.
This is soooooo cool. You ladies did an awesome job. Now this is a class I wouldn’t mind taking with my girls. I bet it was fun!
I would love to take a cake decorating class from Sweet Designs by Jennie. I believe that individual bakers will teach practical wisdom along with how to do cake decoration efficiently.
Wow, the Piped Flowers Class sounds like such a delightful experience! The way Jennie creates a relaxed and inclusive environment while teaching such intricate techniques is truly impressive.
Yum! Those cupcakes are too pretty to eat. I’d like to learn how to make those, though.
Thrilled to finally learn the art of creating edible floral masterpieces. Transforming buttercream into blossoms.
I couldn’t believe these were cupcakes, wow!!! This is so impressive to say the least. Well done!
That sounds like a fun chance to learn something new. My daughter loves to be in the kitchen too.
