Enjoying the Community Spirit at Potter Street Fete 2025

Last year, Dann and I started helping out with the Harlow Chinese School. This year, when the opportunity came up to join the committee for the Potter Street Fete 2025, we both really wanted to help out. Community is something that has always been important to me, and Potter Street is full of community! This little fete has been running for 5 years this year, so it was a big one to help out with. Dann and I started coming to the committee meetings about 6 months ago, helping plan out things like stalls, Dann made a website, and I created the programme!

The Potter Street Fete 2025 was this year’s version of the fete, which has happened every year on the second bank holiday in May. Like many fetes in England, it’s a sort of mini-fair, which has food stands, games, stalls selling items, and this year even had a ride! We learned a lot through the planning process – I even made a lot of the baked refreshments for the refreshments stand. Though we were primarily helping run the event, Dann and I did have some time to explore together between helping out on stalls, handing out programmes, and dealing with any issues that came up.

If you read some of my posts, you will know that Dann and I are big foodies! At the Potter Street Fete 2025, we had some fantastic food. I wanted to try the jerk chicken on beans and rice for lunch, which was juicy, well cooked and delicious. I even got a bit of extra jerk sauce, which was sweeter than expected, but had a good amount of spices in it. Dann opted for the chicken taco from Chicken Strips, which was crunchy taco shells with fried chicken, really fun peppers, guac and salsa. This dish was a little messy, but the flavors were there. I also had a stack of chocolate covered strawberries, which surprisingly still had their greens on them? Making them slightly hard to eat, along with a chocolate covered waffle that was purchased by another committee member for Dann and I to enjoy. It was chocolate-y and covered in cookies and marshmallows!

One of the other things that makes Potter Street Fete 2025 fantastic is the arena. Throughout the day, there were different acts; line dancers, singers, and even games that everyone could take part in. I did the longest conga in Harlow and the tug-of-war of course. I loved seeing children and families participate in the games – things like the sack race for adults was very fun to watch, and the egg race was full of people running as fast as possible with their little eggs. It gave a really good community vibe, with everyone coming together to do something fun. There were also stalls for different local charities and stalls selling items; the Lego /. Pokemon stall caught my eye, along with a stall where someone was creating caricatures live! The local police and firemen came, to let kids onto their vehicles for a few hours, which also was cool to see. The entire day felt very community focused, and there were so many smiling faces.

Someone probably didn’t know to take the greens off of the strawberries? That would have been my treat of choice too though. I love chocolate covered strawberries
