Robin is a 6 year old who has quite good reading skills! We read each and every day, though previously we have not dived into chapter books. They seemed quite daunting and grown up, especially with the lack of colored pictures. Recently, however, we got our hands on Princess Minna: The Enchanted Forest, a chapter book perfect for her age, complete with beautiful, colorful pictures for her to enjoy as well.

Princess Minna: The Enchanted Forest is a chapter book about a princess who needs to save the kingdom! A prince has fallen asleep, and must be awaken before sundown. Princess Minna and her dragon Lorenzo then go off to find the prince. Lorenzo feels there is no time to stop, but Princess Minna is a nice princess, who has to stop to help anyone who she comes across, who needs it. This results in her having a gang of creatures all to help her by the time she gets to the castle.

In the book, there is a bit more than just sleepy prince; there are scary guards and thick thorns. The various creatures she has helped along the way help her when she is stuck, easily saving the prince. This princess didn’t even have to kiss the prince to wake him up, as she didn’t want too! Princess Minna: The Enchanted Forest is a really wonderful twist on classic fairy tail. The pictures and images are really lovely, and the depiction of a darker skinned princess is lovely. The way some of the drawings hold words to highlight them is really clever as well.

Robin does find that Princess Minna: The Enchanted Forest has some challenging words, but often is able to read whole pages out to all of us, which is a really cool thing to see. She doesn’t read an entire chapter in one go, but does enjoy getting closer to chapters and having a more complete story to work from, wondering what Princess Minna will do next. This book also comes with a pack of stickers, which is a really nice touch. It’s just a lovely, colorful, fun story.

I love the twists. No princess really wants to kiss the prince (when she’s a little girl). LOL I can see my granddaughter running from even the thought of doing so.
