SpongeBob SquarePants Labyrinth – Sliding around Bikini Bottom

[Ad – Gifted Products] Robin is such a huge fan of SpongeBob SquarePants, so when we saw SpongeBob SquarePants Labyrinth, we wanted to play it. We’ve previously played Pokemon Labyrinth, so we all sort of knew how the game was played. Labyrinth is a classic board game type, often finding different IPs to change out the characters, cards, and layouts on the board. SpongeBob SquarePants Labyrinth was absolutely perfect for Robin!

When it comes to the game itself, we had four players, so each of us got six cards in front of us, in a row. We couldn’t look at the cards ahead of time. Then the board was created! SpongeBob SquarePants Labyrinth has this sort of way of moving the board around that makes it unique. Building the board requires everyone to grab tiles and randomly slide them into the board. All of the tiles have paths, but they don’t all need to be connected at the start. Robin and Amelia were tasked with creating this board and made light work of it.

Some of the tiles themselves have different iconic pictures from SpongeBob – think a crabby paddy, jelly fish, a boat, etc. There are some tiles which are stuck to the board, which give a guide to where the other tiles can go. On your turn, you need to take the extra tile (the one that doesn’t fit at the start or the one that was just knocked off by the previous player if the game is in play), and slide it into one of the rows marked with a yellow arrow to change the board. Your goal is to get your character to the first card in your pile of six (which you can see before you start).

After you’ve slide the tile into the map, you can then move along any of the paths that are completed, stopping wherever you want. If you do reach the icon you need, you can flip over your hidden card, stop at that icon, and view your next icon. The game then continues until someone has solved all of their cards and returned to their home color. Robin wasn’t the best at this game, maybe due to her age, but was loving all of the SpongeBob theme – which made up for any of her playing strategies being undercut. Amelia on the other hand had a lot of fun trying to solve later-stage passes and attempting to make sure she was still in the running. I do find it hard to actively mess with people in SpongeBob SquarePants Labyrinth, which I think is good, as it makes the game more about thinking ahead and finding paths.
