[Ad- gifted experience] We were all invited to The Christmas Lobster at Farnham Maltings, a new theatre that we’ve previously not attended! Very excited to see a play that is so perfectly themed for Christmas, we were ready to figure out what exactly this lobster had to do with the holiday itself. The Christmas Lobster is a funny, kid-focused performance with a lot of audience interaction and humor that plays with the idea that the audience is there, which always adds a good level of fun!
The start of the performance showed four main characters; an older gentleman who was in charge of the group, a friend of his who acted as the second in charge, the leader’s son, and a happy, go lucky person who just seemed glad to be out of the house! This group thanked us for attending this meeting, on Christmas day, to find the True Meaning of Christmas. This theme, looking for the truth behind Christmas, continued throughout the story, as they all wanted to find out.
The son, however, was not very interested in spending Christmas day running around the area, looking for a Christmas Lobster, who seemed nowhere to be found. There were lots of references to the local area and places that you could actually visit there, with the group attending them to find Christmas Creatures, to ask them what the true meaning of Christmas is. At first, there isn’t a ton of focus on the lobster itself, but it all ties together at the very end.
The true focus of the story is really relationships; we come to find out that the son has never spent Christmas with his father before, his father didn’t celebrate Christmas well previously, and now just wanted to throw the best one ever, but got hung up on the WHY celebrate Christmas to begin with! I won’t spoil it, but the other side characters had different stories and reasons for wanting to discover the True Meaning behind Christmas.
The Christmas Lobster had a lot of funny, laugh-out-loud moments and some more meaningful, heart felt moments. It’s a true Christmas story, that feels wild, wacky, and impossible, all with a sprinkle of Christmas magic. There are a lot of different instruments that end up being played throughout and tons of dance numbers, creating something that flows and works together, even though they move through a lot of locations without a ton of background props!
You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
