Dinner at the Hare Pub

Dann and I were out in the evening playing Pokemon Go and wanted to go out for dinner afterwards instead of getting groceries and making something! We decided to stop at The Hare Pub, which is a part of the McMullen pub chain. They run events like a weekly pub quiz and poker night, bringing some extra excitement into the venue. They also have a separate billiards area, lots of outdoor seating, and indoor dinning. We opted to eat inside as it was getting a little dark and late outside for us. When we went, they had both their standard menu and a smaller selection of Chef Recommendations as well, which worked as specials.

Buffalo Wings & Fried Brie Bites

If there is buffalo wings on the menu, we are likely going to try them. This starter serving came with five wings, which does feel like an odd number. The wings were crispy and coated well in sauce, though for us the sauce could have been spicier. It came with some light blue cheese, that had a mild taste as well. Dann wanted to try the fried brie bites, off of the Chef Recommendations, which had a cranberry and ‘facon’ sauce. The cheese was warm, goo-y with a good cheese pull. The sauce was nice too, though the facon had a really smoky taste to it, which if you don’t like smoky flavors, you might not like so much!

Mixed Grill & Beef, Ale, Horseradish Pie

For our mains, Dann ordered a Mixed Grill, which had loads of stuff on it. The steak was, as it said on the menu, on the smaller side (as there is so much on the plate), but it was perfectly cooked. I am surprised nobody brought a steak knife! The gammon steak at The Hare Pub was cooked well too, though for some reason it was a little chewy. The peas were… well.. peas! Very much what you’d expect. There was this mango chicken on the plate, which was juicy and well cooked – it felt a little different. The egg was sort of solid, not the best cook for him, but otherwise everything was what would be expected. I got the beef, ale and horseradish pie, which was actually the last of this special from the Chef Recommendations. The pie itself was on the smaller side and – honestly – did not taste at all of horseradish, but the beef was tender and it all very much felt savory and beefy. I didn’t care much for the crust, but I rarely do. The vegetables were just that – carrots, peas, and broccoli that were all boiled, so exactly what’s expected. The mash wasn’t the best, wasn’t the worse, and the gravy was just ok. I am not a huge pub person, but we are on a mission to try out new places, so I wanted to try out The Hare Pub.

The Hare Pub does, for some reason, require you to start a tab the moment you walk in. This means that we didn’t get to see that they had a cocktail menu with a deal on, otherwise we would have probably got some cocktails. When you open a tab, you then need to still cash out your tab at the end. I am not really sure why there is this policy, but the staff were nice enough and the place was well decorated and airy!
