Valentine’s Day Cupcake with Sweet Designs by Jennie

Amelia and I go to a cupcake decorating class every month, as a bit of mother-daughter time, and this month Sweet Designs by Jennie had a special Valentine’s Day class, the day before Valentine’s Day, so you can make a half dozen cupcakes to share with your loved one. This class, unlike a lot of the others by Sweet Designs by Jennie, only comes around once a year, so we were both pretty excited as we hadn’t made these before.

To make things a little bit sweeter, we were able to get jam put in our cupcakes, which honestly is our favorite way to have cake! When we arrived, as usual, the cakes were already baked and everything to decorate was set out. This set of cupcakes is more of Jennie’s classic designs, with three cupcakes that have fondant toppers and three cupcakes that are primarily piped. In a lot of the more recent classes designed by her, there have been more complex fondant designs with classes either being primarily fondant or primarily frosting.

We started off with the fondant, specifically using the white fondant before the red so that there was no color transfer. There were a lot of small and large things to make with white; textured backgrounds for other fondant pieces, we did some of the pedling at the edges of a background, made a ribbon which was terribly hard and I ended up not doing a good job of at all but Amelia found to be very easy… There were just a lot of little pieces to make! The tiny heart was fun. For the red, we made a challenging chocolate box, which Amelia and I both had as our favorite. There were lots of pretty details!

When it came to the piping in the Valentine’s Day Cupcake Class, we quite enjoyed the simplicity of the piping styles. Amelia likes piping a lot and finds it very fun to pipe, especially when the frosting is vanilla buttercream, which is her favorite. This class was easily done well before the two hours, which might be because we are so well practiced by now! We took the cupcakes home, Amelia brought one to her friends house, and we’ve been eating them. I really enjoy how impressive the decorations are and how well Jennie is able to explain, step by step, what to do. The entire class feels casual; like a bunch of friends hanging out and having a good time together.

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
