How Vitamins and Supplements Can Help You Feel Healthier During Winter

Winter can play havoc with our bodies and minds. Most obviously, you’re more likely to get a cold at this time of year, because the colder temperatures tend to weaken our immune systems – as well as the immune systems of those around us. The limited window of sunlight can also be problematic, inhibiting our ability to create the vitamins we need to thrive.

In many cases, we can limit these problems through the right supplements and multivitamin tablets. Let’s consider a few of the positive effects that supplements might have during winter.

Boosting Energy Levels

A number of B vitamins are particularly important at this time of year. B-12 plays a role in supporting the function of the nervous system, while B6 allows us to break food down into energy. The latter, along with iron, can be vital in driving up energy levels, and guarding against anaemia, which women might be particularly prone to. You can find these vitamins and minerals in leafy greens, nuts, fish, and red meat.

Strengthening the Immune System

Vitamin D is limited during winter, since it’s created by the body in response to sunlight. The government recommends that everyone supplement vitamin D during autumn and winter – and people with darker skin are at greater risk, because melanin blocks sunlight. Vitamin D helps to support the development of bones and teeth, and also supports the immune system.

Other micronutrients can also help the immune system. These include vitamin C, which is found in citrus and which reduces the duration and intensity of a cold, and zinc, which can be found in meat and fish.

Enhancing Hair Health

Hair actually relies on quite a specific cocktail of micronutrients, including zinc and vitamin D. Vitamin B7 (better known as biotin) is critical for keeping skin and hair healthy, and a lack of it can lead to thinner hair. You’ll find it in eggs, meat and fish. It’s most potent in chicken liver.

You can find vitamins for hair in a series of special supplements, designed to support healthy hair growth. During winter, you might use them to support a well-thought-out diet. For vegans, this might be especially worthwhile.

Supporting Eye and Skin Health

Vitamin A (retinol) is an essential vitamin which not only bolsters the immune system but also helps to protect the skin. It’s also great for helping you to see in dim light. It’s famously found in carrots, in the form of beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A.

Also important is vitamin E, which helps skin cells to retain the appropriate amount of water – which in turn keeps them pliant and elastic. You can find it in plant oils, nuts, and seeds.
