[Ad- collab] If you have glanced at my social media, you will find that I am actually a games journalist and community manager working in video games. My partner, Dann, is actually an editor at the world’s largest mobile gaming site. Saying we are gamer geeks is sort of an understatement – we have been in games so long that it’s just apart of our personality. Gaming is actually a big part of most people’s lives, from young children playing games to adults getting together to play online multiplayers or playing single player games on their own.
When I was younger, playing games was something uncool. Now, it seems that everyone is describing themselves as gamers or talking about the newest game they have purchased. With the continuing rise in households with consoles and the availability of games – especially free games – increasing, the number of people who are finding gaming is their main hobby is following suit. Gaming is a way to bring yourself out of this world and enjoy a world worth playing in. Often, dating gamers comes with memes that are quite… incorrect – both from the “gamers dates gamer boys” and the “gamers dates gamer girls” point of view. So I figured I’d share my point of view when it comes to geek dating.
Playing Games Together
Often, a lot of the memes show people who are so wrapped up in a game that they do not pay attention to the other person. I always found this to be a strange look – if your partner was out playing a sport like rugby, you wouldn’t demand attention mid-game – so why is that expected when it comes to gaming? Often gaming does take a lot of attention, which is something that is expected! Any hobby can take attention. Dann doesn’t get very distracted by games, and we often play games together anyway. We spend time playing cheesy point and click adventure games, multiplayer games about quickly moving house, or board games made into mobile adaptations. Gaming together is fun, even if you aren’t a gamer, as it’s just an activity that can be done together.
Having the Latest Devices
One of the coolest things about dating gamers is hearing about all of the latest tech that’s out there. We have a few VR headsets around, neat controllers, new games – as a hobby there is so much within the sphere of gaming that you can always find something new and interesting. New devices come with features that can really change the scope of your partner’s hobby – and it’s fun seeing what they enjoy and what they don’t quite care for. We love our Xbox and use it so often, where as VRs are more to take out to try out specific games. We both even use the Nintendo RingFit to change the way we have been exercising – all through gaming.
Gaming Events
Gaming is often a social activity, which means Dann is always interested in going to different gaming events. There are events for specific games and events that just showcase a lot of games – all of which are fun ways to get out of the house and see the hobby bloom. When events aren’t currently on, there are gaming themed bars and places, full of references from games, that can be easily enjoyed as date nights or nights out. So much culture is around gaming that it’s not challenging to come up with good things to do as a couple or to find places that fit in with what Dann’s hobby.
Dating gamers is fun! Dating anyone with a hobby that they enjoy can be a good time, really. Games is something that so many people are into, and with such a huge amount of games out there, a gamer will always have something to talk about! If you are looking for some really geeky girl gamers to date, there always is the possibility of cosplaying as cute characters – which can be pretty awesome.
