World Book Day Crafting Challenge by Viking

World Book Day

*AD – the supplies and book for this craft was gifted to our household for this post. All opinions, as always, are our own.

Today is World Book Day, a day that helps promote the idea of reading, books, copyright, and much more. I am sure many people are celebrating by checking out their favourite book, visiting a library or dressing up as their favourite characters. I had not celebrated World Book Day before, so when Viking Direct reached out to with a challenge to do something a little different, I jumped on board. I am not the craft-y-est person in the world, but I really love doing little projects and crafts – and am trying to do more crafts this year.

Looking through Book Art by Clare Youngs there were so many ideas! From jumping jack characters that move a bit to lanterns that you can use to decorate your house – there is a lot that can be done with old books or magazines. I know the idea of destroying an old book might be a bit weird for World Book Day, but up-cycling books into something new is such a good idea. Many, many books are stained, ruined, and ripped up – so being able to make them into something new while still honouring the book is great.

As Easter is coming up and I have a friend who I’d love to make a general card for, I really wanted to do the Rabbit designed card that was within the book. This was a fairly easy project – as most of them are in the book – and didn’t require too many items either. I did not have any trace paper, so I free-hand drew the design, but there are little templates at the back of the book that you can trace onto trace paper if you’d like to make things a bit easier for yourself. The bunny design, in the book, had a bit of wheat next to it, but I liked the vine design by the snail slightly more, so I decided to use that.

After I had drawn out the bunny and the vine, I doodled little designs in the bunny, trying to just fill space and draw, before cutting out the vine with a craft knife. Once this sheet was set, I ripped the paper around the edging and glued it to a cut bit of coloured card stock. As Viking had provided some stamps, I stamped my friend’s name into the card and wrote her a message. Claire got some bad news recently and is currently doing a bunch of book reviews on her blog, so I figured she’d be the perfect person for a little card.

I hope that you also have a wonderful World Book Day – crafting or just reading – books are really a wonderful part of our lives.

Check out some of the other crafts and projects we’ve done.

This is such a cool craft! I have mixed feelings about using books as art, but I love that rabbit card you made, it’s so cute…and it looks like it would be something easy-ish to make. Great post!

This is such a cute project and I love how it’s perfect for world book day! The bunny is so pretty and I love the patterns inside. The stamps look really effective too! I hope your friend liked her card, such a lovely thoughtful gesture <3 xx
