Picking Our Own Wild Flowers at Writtle Sunflowers

Dann and I often go to a pick your own flower place, but after last year’s confetti flower farm, Amelia had asked if she could come along! So, while Kai was off doing his work experience, Amelia, Robin, Dann and I headed to Writtle Sunflowers, to pick our own sunflowers and wildflowers. Writtle Sunflowers is located at Pooty Pools Farm, which has been farmed by the Metson family for over 100 years, with three generations of the family currently working on the farm.

Writtle Sunflowers has planted tons and tons of sunflowers and wildflowers all along the soil this year, along with adding in a few classes that you can book for. We didn’t go for a class this time, and instead booked to walk around on a sunny afternoon. Pre-booking is recommended, as they do fill up at time slots, but when we went there wasn’t many people at all.

They have a good amount of parking outside Writtle Sunflowers, with a beautiful arch and small farm shop in the entry. Everything is blooming with sunflowers! There are rows and rows of them, grown nice and tall. You can bring your own scissors if you want to pick, purchase a pair to take home, or rent a pair for a tenner, which includes two bouquets of flowers when you leave. We went for this rent option, which is a really good deal, allowing us to get six sunflowers and a bouquet of wildflowers. The wildflowers and sunflowers you can pick grow in massive rows on either side of the farm, which is fantastic to take pictures in and walk around.

There were tons and tons of wildflowers, with a bunch of different colors and varieties to pick from. Amelia had a fantastic time creating her bouquets and taking pictures of the beautiful blooms. Robin opted to grab one of their trail worksheets, which has a beautiful water color map, with some hints as to where to find letters. These letters were dotted about the farm, along with challenges like crawl like a beetle, which she thought was funny. Putting them all together gave us a word and rewarded her with a sticker at the end.

We also went into the sunflower maze – we had never been in a flower mase before – which was very fun. In the very middle, the sunflowers had grown extremely tall, so it was fun getting lost in a sea of flowers. In the maze, you could not pick any of the flowers, so they all looked really healthy and long! At Writtle Sunflowers, they also have a picnic area, which a lot of families were using to have their lunch. Dann checked out the Coffee Truck, which did coffee, tea, alcohol drinks, toasties, and more, providing a good selection.

There were also photo points in this area allowing you to take a picture on front of a big butterfly wings, on a measuring scale that showed how tall you were compared to other sunflowers, and in a sort of flower field that you could poke your head into. These photo places were fun, and we did spend time snapping away at them. Writtle Sunflowers also has a little farm shop full of sunflower-themed items, which is so cute. The while place just felt nice and relaxing, for a fun day out picking flowers and enjoying the sun. There were tons of bees buzzing and laughter happening, it was all just so lovely and happy!

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
