We love reading stories in our household. Each and every night, our children sit down and listen to a bedtime story that they pick out. I often look to match the books with seasons, to make things more interesting and to add to our own collection of reading books! As Halloween is happening in the month of October, I always pick up an extra two or three books for the year, so that they have new books to read and to enjoy with the season! We have selected three of our favorite Halloween children’s books that we really enjoy this time of year.
There’s a Witch in your Book
We had not seen this series of books before, but after getting There’s a Witch in your Book, we went on to get the unicorn version and the alien version! This story is super interactive, telling you that there is a witch in your book doing magic and making a mess! You are instructed to use your magic wand (your finger) and wave them to cast spells, look through a hole in your book at your messy room, and chant various spells. Children get really into these interactions, enjoying being apart of the story and playing along as they try to get rid of the witch. There are lots of really fun moments in There’s a Witch in your Book too – including slime, bubble bunnies, and the witch turning into a cat. It’s just a really enjoyable story.
Christopher Pumpkin
Christopher Pumpkin was our favorite Halloween story from last year – this book focuses on a pumpkin that was created by a witch, to help her throw a party for her friends. Unlike all of the other pumpkins this witch created, Christopher Pumpkin doesn’t like scary things or nasty things. He doesn’t want to help make toe jam soup or create scares. He wants to make beautiful bunting and pretty cup cakes. He gets picked on for not being scary, by both the other pumpkins and the witch herself, but in the end is able to use his ability to make something beautiful to be the scariest pumpkin after all – and he never seems to be too bothered about being different. The illustrations and the general story in this book is really wonderful.
Room on the Broom
The entire Room on the Broom is a classic – and a great one at that. There is a shiny, 20th anniversary addition which we own, as well as an original version. This story showcases a witch, who is flying around with her cat, but due to win, all sorts of havoc happens. She looses her hat and her bow, at various points, but animals she runs into down below are super helpful to her, so she doesn’t loose anything for long. However, when anyone helps her, she offers them a ride on her broom – which eventually gets too full and breaks. Together, though, they are all able to create the perfect broom to continue their ride! It’s a cute and simple book about being helpful, really, to everyone you meet.
Winnie’s Magic Wand
Winnie and Wilbur both feature in their own series of stories – we actually have a few of their books including Winnie in Winter and Winnie’s New Computer, but I wanted to pick one to focus on, and Winnie’s Magic Wand is perfect for Halloween. In this book, Winnie is looking to go to a magic talent show, which requires a party dress of course. However, her party dress is dirty and when she washes it, she washes her wand along with it. In an attempt to fix her mistake, she tries drying her wand, but it’s still not working very well, turning apples into the wrong thing again and again! Wilbur, her trusty cat, attempts to get her a new wand, but doesn’t pay close attention to what it is. In the end, she ends up at the magic show, but her wand is a bit of a surprise. Despite nothing going right on her big day, she does end up impressing her friends and having a great day!
