A Day Out at Harlow Museum and Walled Gardens

Dann has lived in Harlow all of his life but hasn’t actually visited the Harlow Museum and Walled Garden before – something which I found to be almost unbelievable! As the weather took a good turn, we wanted to take some time to check out the Walled Garden, which is the current bit of the museum that is open, with the indoor museum currently closed due to lockdown measures. When we arrived, we were actually given a little picture scavenger hunt, which was quite cute! The first picture was within the museum, but the rest were all outdoors.

The walled gardens around the museum are actually really huge – there is tons to see and a fair bit to walk around, which I am sure will only grow more beautiful as spring comes to full bloom in the gardens. At the moment, you can walk through a few different areas – one with a little mini-maze, another with big open bits of grass and small statues, and another with a few smaller pieces to look at and flowers all around.

You can easily walk around, sniffing beautiful flowers and taking a look at the different statues that are around. There isn’t much information on these various statues – though there seems to be some notice boards that currently don’t have any information on them, however the statues are fun to see anyway. They have this little mini-maze area, with small hedges that make you feel like a giant in a maze, which was very fun for the children. There is also a little looking bay in this area, where you can go on this large metal structure to see everything from a birds eye view.

In the other section of the garden, things are super open – big fields of grass with benches dotted around the outside. Flowers around the edge, and high walls making you feel like you are inside some sort of palace. We explored around – saw the few statues and the kids ran and ran, which was good for them! The paths are pretty straight forward and fun to walk around.

The Harlow Museum wasn’t open yet, as previously mentioned, but there were some windows out the front that showcased a few select pieces from their collection, which give you a taste of what you might find inside. We are quite excited to actually go inside some day – but for now, walking around the walled gardens on a sunny day is a day out that can’t be beat!

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
