A Moonless Night Film – Captivating Art

[Ad- gifted experience] Claire and I went to the Rich Mix to experience A Moonless Night, the first film from Snowapple Collective. Born from some poems written during COVID, a Moonless Night is more of a work of art showcased through the medium of film then a film created for the cinema. The creators of this piece worked from some poems that were written by one of them, about the concept of not being able to sleep. Being stuck in the madness of a moonless night, one that never ends.

The film opens up with these poems, put to beautiful music, explaining that the moon is falling from the sky. A Moonless Night has two main settings; scenes of the moon, represented by a person, struggling and exploring. The other scene is of a bar, filled with people, all having their never-ending descend into madness. The people in the bar all had their own things going on; a couple were drinking and playing chess, a lady was writing endlessly, seemingly trying to solve some sort of paperwork. There was a boisterous man who entered, always talking about seeds and trees. As the moon moved around from place to place, you watched these people in their bar slowly start obsessing over everything they were doing.

The costume design of A Moonless Night was breathtaking. I really loved the bartender and the server’s costumes. The Moon also looked beautiful in her makeup and outfits. The poems combined with music were fitting and stunning. There were several bits of imagery that accompanied the poems which felt fitting. There was a lot going on, but everything felt fitting to each other. A Moonless Night does feel like art, but it’s art done extremely well, especially for individuals who haven’t done film before. If you said to me that this was an indie film project by a bunch of creatives who had been making film for over ten years, I would have thought that that fit.

At the end of A Moonless Night, my interpretation of the film was one about the loss of memories, the passage of time, and the loss of sanity. It was interesting hearing what inspired the performance from the creatives themselves, who explained the poems, process around creating this four year long project, and about the music that went along with it. A Moonless Night was spectacular, and do hope this film ends up on the internet, for more to see.
