Blueberry Snowball | Aloha 65 Cocktail Recipe

*AD – the items in this review were gifted to our household for this post. All opinions, as always, are our own.

Earlier on in the year we tried out Aloha 65, a zingy spirit flavoured with notes of chilli and pineapple among other things. Normally the bottle has a warm summer theme however, as you can see in the featured image, this time we had one with a different label. One with a winter theme, and this gave us a few ideas about how the drink could be used for more than just zesty summery drinks. In fact, we decided that we’d make a drink with winter colours and a literal ball of ice tucked up inside it.

The idea for the drink is incredibly simple; winter is a time of berries, and flavours like blackberry, blueberry and apple. For this drink we, very simply, took some blueberry juice and cast aside the golden ratios of cocktails – instead doing a simple 5 to 1 ratio of juice to Aloha. The reason for the ratio is because of the potency of the Aloha. At first we tried a 1:2 ratio, with 50ml of Aloha and 100ml of Blueberry, but the bite of the spirit cut clean through the watery taste of berry-based juice.

Once we’d figured out the ratio it was a case of mixing the drink without any ice in it, because the berry juice already waters things down. We decided that we’d cool it down by adding ice in after the fact, but Jupiter had the great idea of adding a literal snowball into the drink. To make the snowball we used our blender (Note: It’s a Nutribullet, not a standard blender, so it’s very good at chopping up bits of ice to create snow) to blend a tray of ice cubes into a snow-like powder that we then packed together with our hands. Though it might be a little funny, it feels so winter-like and joyous, that it brings the spirit of wintertime.

So, for this cocktail you’ll need the following simple list, in order.

  • 25ml Aloha 65 (Winter branding ideally, but not essential)
  • 125ml Ocean Spray Blueberry Juice
  • 1x Hand-Packed Snowball (Packed Ice)

If it’s snowing outside of your town, you can just pick up a bit of snow from outside and use it in your drink. It’s all up to you really! Aloha 65, as previously mentioned in our last article, is a wonderful spirit that can be used in place of the spirits you normally drink in any of your favourite cocktails. It’s a very versatile spirit, with it’s own flavours and bits of kick.
