Cammas Hall is our most local pick your own berry farm. We love going there for the various seasonal events they hold and to pick strawberries each year! Cammas Hall has a lot of different options when it comes to fruit, and you can see what is pickable through their website before you go, which is useful if you are unsure what is in season. We tend to go for the strawberries, as they are very popular in our home, but this year we noticed that cherries were really for picking, so we had to check those out as well, as we had never picked cherries before!
At Cammas Hall, we actually pre-book our slot, to ensure we get in at the time we want. Pre-booking does allow you to pay for each person you want to take with you, but this price actually counts against the berries you pick, so it’s like a holding fee that then is used to pay for your berries. When you arrive, there are signs that are super easy to follow, showing you where to go to pick. You and your family can grab baskets, which come in two forms. There are smaller, cardboard baskets and larger, more sturdy baskets that have metal handles and are decorated with Cammas Hall’s name. You are actually able to keep both baskets, which is a nice touch, as the second ones are really sturdy and nice.
First, we went to pick strawberries, which are in long rows at children’s head height. This is perfect for Robin, Amelia and Kai as they can really see the berries and find the ones that are most fresh. We picked loads and loads of berries, making sure the kids picked ones that were ripe, which only took a little direction this year as they are so use to it. We quickly filled up our baskets, and then dedicated a basket to cherry picking.
None of us had ever picked cherries before, and with the shops having cherries which are really sour, we decided to just get one basket. This was a mistake. These cherries were delicious; so sweet, so juicy, and so delicious. We picked the darker berries, as we figured those were ripe. The trees had two rows for us to pick from, with plenty of berries for the kids to reach. They were able to pull off cherries in pairs, which they then said was so cool and started making it their goal.
When we were all done picking, we made our way back to the farm shop, but there were actually a bunch of little outdoor games for us to play for a bit! Tic Tac Toe was a favorite, as it used cow bums and heads, as well as pig bums and heads, depending on what side you were on. There were a few throwing games, one with beanbags into baskets (eggs in nests) and another with rope circles on a bee hive. Both were quite fun to do, and more challenging as you went back. Along with these games, there were a few different areas where you can take photos, which is always fun to do. Once the kids had played with everything, we moved into the farmshop.
There are lots of fresh produce in the farm shop, organic foods, and many different lovely items to purchase. Your berries are weighted, and the children got to have a I Picked at Cammas Hall sticker, which was a nice touch. Cammas Hall also has a little cafe and a small play park that can be played on too! It’s a lovely place to take your family to pick their own fruit.
You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
I love fruit picking and often we travel up north to pick strawberries and apples. Amazing and fun activities.
I wish there was apple picking near me! That’s so much fun.
That sounds so fun! You have such a wonderful family. I love the experience and hope you had fun!
Aww thank you so much! We did.
I’ve picked strawberries as a kid. It was awesome. The only cherry picking I’ve ever done was in my great-grandfather’s tree outside of his bedroom window. I remember him rapping on the window for me to get out of the tree (which I did, lol). 🙂 Love that the strawberries were kid height!
Oh wow, how amazing that your great grandfather had a tree!
