Dinner at Konoba Forno

When going back to our hotel, we kept passing Konoba Forno, which was up a small hill. One evening, in the time after exploring and before an event we were heading too, we wanted to get some food and decided on here. Though many, many people said the meat platters were the thing to have, we wanted to try something that called itself traditional. The food at Konoba Fornzo had English under it, which often stated “traditional Croatia dish” and explained what it was.

Much like everywhere we seemed to eat in Croatia, you could sit in an open-air terrace or inside. We opted for upstairs in the open air, despite it being slightly windy, primarily because the temperature was fantastic. The staff were lovely, explaining the menu to us when we had questions. I picked a dish that was in the hot starters menu, but asked if it was big enough as a main, and they said it was! Now, I cannot find the menu online so I am not completely sure of the name of the dishes.

The Pasta and some Potatoes

I got this pasta at Konoba Forno, which was under the starters but was a huge portion for a starter. I also got them with roasted potatoes, which may sound strange – but that’s because it is probably strange. I really have enjoyed all of the potatoes I have had in Croatia, and wanted to overload on carbs because I like carbs and we were going out drinking. The pasta had a deep, rich meat sauce. It was very, very beef forward – not so tomato-y at all. I loved it The pasta was clearly handmade and felt very rustic. I love potatoes and these oven roasted potatoes were crispy on one side, well oiled, and delicious. I was very full and happy with my meal!

Beef Tartare and a Lamb Shank

Dann ordered the beef tartare, which again was a very generous portion. It came with an entire side of shaved butter. He didn’t expect the shaved butter and had a whole mouth full, as he thought it was cabbage, before he realized. The beef was fresh, well seasoned, and went well with the butter. They also sent over a bunch of charred bread, which was a little thick but otherwise was good. He also ordered the Lamb Shank at Konoba Forno, which was fall of the bone, well cooked. It was delicious – I had a bite and it tasted so well seasoned and well cooked. The potato side was in a little round, which was well cooked too, and tasted simple but good.

Semolina Lemon Cake

On the short dessert menu, there was a semolina lemon cake that said it was traditional, so we ordered it. The cake came warm, with a bunch of lemon curd on top. I really liked the texture of the cake itself, which was on the chewy side. The lemon curd was tart, not too sweet, and very good. Dann and I split this dessert and enjoyed it. It felt like a great end to a perfect meal out.

French Food at Les Felibres

While in Paris for Pokemon Go Fest 2025, I wanted to arrange some sort of meal for all of our Harlow community who was coming. There were about 20 of us attending the event, with most of us free on the Friday evening, so that’s when I planned the meal for. Dann spent some time looking up areas, and though there were some fantastic Asian options, we wanted something everyone would find good, so he picked Les Felibres as they had fish n chips, burgers, and some duck!

We booked easily on line, with an email confirmation as our party was quite large, before being all ready for the day. Some of our party did arrive like half an hour early, but the restaurant let them right in and they got drinks to start along with some pretzels for the table, which was nice. Others, as it always is with a large group, came slightly late, so we had some staggered ordering and eating. Despite being like this, Les Felibres were kind and accommodating! There aren’t any English menus, but a few of the dishes are written in English next to it, and we all bumbled through it getting the gist of what we each wanted to order.

Brunch at The Master Barista

Dann and I were looking to get a good, filling brunch within our town, so ended up at The Master Barista. We walk by this place often, seeing people eating outside. It’s attached to a jeweler shop, owned by the same people, which plays on the same designs as them. They have tons of seating in side and out, with an upstairs and downstairs, right by the bar counter. There are real Instagram vibes; interesting murals, flowers hanging from the ceiling, and neon lights! But, let’s get into the food.

Dinner at La Norma

When walking around the bay, we hadn’t really planned where we wanted to eat and instead just continued walking until something caught our eye. The restaurant we ended up at was La Norma, which has a small menu divided into fun categories called things like “I LOVE FISH” and “I LOVE MEAT”, to give an idea of what you are in the mood for. They have both upstairs outdoor seating, indoor seating, and seating by the sea! After being out in the wind, we opted for indoor seating, but do like the option to sit by the sea if the weather is fantastic.

Lunch at Rainbow and Dove Pub

When looking for a place for a lunch with one of our friends, Dann came across the Rainbow and Dove Pub. At the moment, we are trying to go to every place to eat in all of Harlow this year, to see what the best places are. Neither Dann and I ever really pick pubs – it’s just something we aren’t that curious about, so it’s been fun to try new pubs and see what they are like. The Rainbow and Dove is an award winning independent pub with an ever-changing menu. They have a wine of the month, burger of the month, and tons of daily specials that are dependent on the produce that the pub has received, as well as pub classics that are always there.
