Marvellous Makers – The Essex Summer Reading Challenge 2024

Robin is a big reader, with her favorite store being Waterstones and her favorite hobby being “reading comic books”, we are always looking for new ways to encourage and support her love of reading. For as long as she enjoyed reading, we have been signing her up for all sorts of reading related events in Essex. We’ve read to dogs, gone to plays that are based on books, and have taken her to the library at any chance we have gotten. The Summer and Winter reading challenge each year is a real highlight, as it does change so much and is so rewarding. This summer, the Essex Reading Challenge is called Marvellous Makers, and there is a fantastic display right at our local library in Harlow Town, which runs until September 7th.

The 13-Storey Treehouse at The New Wimbledon Theatre

[Ad- gifted experience] Amelia, Robin and I wanted to spend some quality time together (while the boys stayed home and gamed!) so we went to the New Wimbledon Theatre to see The 13-Storey Treehouse. We’ve not previously been to The New Wimbledon Theatre, which is located in Wimbledon, much like the Polka (one of our favorites). This theatre has a grand entrance, along with a bar outside the actual theatre. The theatre itself has a large central stage and then loads of floors, giving people the option of different views. We came to specifically see The 13-Storey Treehouse, and on this specific day, they were also handing out huge bags of free sweets (pick-n-mix style) to anyone who entered, advertising a nearby candy story, which was pretty fantastic.

Piped Flowers Class with Sweet Designs by Jennie

Amelia has expressed interest in spending more one on one time with me, since becoming a teenager. She has different interests then Kai and Robin, so we’ve been going to things together that entertain both of our hobbies. The latest activity she wanted to try out was the Piped Flowers Class with Sweet Designs by Jennie. Amelia is always in the kitchen with me, but much prefers baking to cooking, so decorating felt like the natural next thing.

Visiting the Naze Nature Discovery Centre

Walton-on-the-naze is a nearby beach area that has a massive park that our children enjoy, so when I saw the Kite Festival happening at Naze Nature Discovery Centre, it felt like a good excuse to get beachside at the start of the summer holiday! Each year, the Naze Nature Discovery Centre hosts a kite festival, that allows many people to come and hang out at the centre, viewing kites that get lifted in a special kite zone and flying your own kites outside as well. There is a kite decorating course, however due to how busy our day was, we weren’t sure what time we were going to arrive for the kite festival so didn’t book it up. This activity is quite affordable, but I would recommend booking ahead and making sure you are there for your time slot!

A Day Out at Signs of the Time Music Festival

[Ad- gifted experience] Dann and I both enjoy a bunch of different types of music, so when we heard about the Signs of the Time Music Festival, we wanted to see what it was all about. We attended the festival on the Sunday, where we were very excited about seeing Feeder and Reverend and the Makers at the end of the evening. Both of us were also helping out the St Clare’s Hospice, who were the charity partners of the event, which means that we spent some of our time there presenting bracelets to people in exchange for donations to the Hospice.
