Best Free Play Parks in Essex

When the weather is looking good, you often want to go out and enjoy it! We are a bit adventure family at the Hadley-Sullivan household, so we have gone to so many different parks, splash parks, and outdoor areas all year around, to explore what they have to offer. Since we have been to so many places over the years, we decided to put together a bunch of the best free play parks in Essex to visit with your children, to better make use of the summer holiday and sunshine! There are a few play park-adjacent places in this list, but they go well with the getting outdoor and playing activities!

A Day Out at Shepreth Wildlife Park

In the summertime, we do enjoy going off and seeing places that have animals in them! There is so much joy that can be found in seeing animals interact with each other, be fed, and so much to learn from keepers. One of the little wildlife parks near us, that feels super understated, is Shepreth Wildlife Park. Dann and I have gone a few times as a little date night, but recently we took our kids along for the adventure! Shepreth is a really reasonably priced wildlife park with a big focus on the animals there.

A Day Out at Hobbledown Heath

Over the Easter Holiday, we wanted to make the most of the reasonable weather – so we decided to go to an outdoor adventure park! Hobbledown Heath is a new adventure park with tons of different indoor and outdoor play areas, actors pretending to be fairies and magical creatures, live animals to look at, and lots of places to explore. We went when they had a word-related scavenger hunt on as well, with letters posted up – which was very fun. It’s easily a place that you can spend an entire day out at, and we could have totally spent more time there then we did!

A Day Out at Happy Birthday Sunita at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch

[Ad- gifted experience] We have visited the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch several times as it’s one of our favorites! The venue has a lovely cafe and a bar, as well as a stage for taking pictures and a little reading library at the back. It’s a lovely theatre that we are always excited to return too. This time, we went to see Happy Birthday Sunita – a play about an indian family, their dynamics, and Sunita turning 30 years old.

Exploring Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve

While on our adventure to Wookey Hole, we did have a full day of just visiting the local area. As the weather was so wonderful and nature so plentiful in that area, we decided to go to Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve and have a big walk about. Dann and I decided to do this as a photography walk, as we had been taking so many photos of the new places all day, and figured that brought more adventure and slowed down the walk – which was already quite long – so smaller feet (Robin’s specifically) could keep up.
