Flower and Lace Cupcake Class with Sweet Designs by Jennie

Every month, Amelia and I go to a cupcake class! We’ve been doing this for well over a year (nearly two, I think!) and have not had a duplicate class yet. Sweet Designs by Jennie creates lots of new designs each month, however, the Flower and Lace Cupcake Class was a classic that we had not gotten around to getting to yet. It’s got a lot of fondant decorating, including creating little fondant flowers. Like all of the classes, Sweet Designs by Jennie has new tools and new techniques.

As in every class, the cupcakes themselves were already baked, all of the tools were out, and we had a lot of fondant to play around with. The flower and lace cupcake class went through different wants to mould fondant. We started by rolling it out thin, rolling the lace pattern on top of it, and then placing them onto these different half-globes so that they created domes of these lace patterns for the tops of the cupcakes. These were interesting as we had not used any of these materials before, so they felt new and interesting.

After our main half-circles were created, we then went into creating lots of flowers. This cupcake class had tons and tons of flowers (which is in the name, Flower and Lace, so it makes sense). We made three different sizes of flowers, with the stamp-thingy that we have used previously. These were in three different colors. I do like that Jennie has us put them in this sort of bumpy stand so that they don’t dry flat and have more texture! We also created a bit of lace for the middle of one of the cupcakes by cutting out a ruffled circle, cutting a middle circle, splitting the outline and then fluffing the edges with the tool on the outside.

We also created a few really tricky roses by fluffing out the leaves from a different cutter, on a matt, and then folding it over itself. This was actually one of the more difficult things I have ever done, especially as after these roses were finished, they were still challenging to actually get on the cake and stay put! I do like the use of the round sprinkles on these cupcakes, as they sort of decorate the edges and look fantastic. Placing the toppers on the cupcakes are actually so different too, as we had to pipe on a glob of frosting and then put the globes over them, being careful not to ruin the patterns on them! We did have one large rose which we pipped, that Amelia and I had done at a few other classes, so we were well into that too.

Amelia, as always, had a fantastic time decorating these cupcakes. She is really into learning and into creating – plus is a big fan of fondant. She enjoyed making all of the different sized flowers the best, and found that it was cool that she learned new things, even though we had been going for so long. It’s so important to spend this one on one time with her as she is growing up, and we do treasure our time together.

You can check out our other Days Out to see what else we’ve been up too!
